History of the Cheltenham Nibletts Appendix 9

The history of the family in Cheltenham and the surrounding areas including Tewkesbury is closely tied with the southern portions of Worcestershire and with Tirley in North Gloucestershire. These places have been more important to the Niblett family than Cheltenham itself. The town developed mainly as a health centre in which to enjoy the benefits of the spa water discovered there in 1717 and became a fashionable place to rival Bath in the Regency period. It was also closely connected to the cloth industry but expanded from that into other industries at an early stage and later became a centre for military administration.

The first entries in the area were further west at Dymock where Richard and Anne christened three daughters – Ursula (Oct 18, 1625, Anne Mar 8, 1627 and Marjory Jan 14, 1628. It is likely that Richard was from Upton on Severn. There were apparently no male heirs.

Apart from isolated events such as the marriage of Alice at Kempsley to John Phelps on June 26, 1674 and the unconfirmed birth of Samuel ⁽¹⁾ at Maisemore in 1768 nothing more occurs in the area until the marriage of Thomas and Elizabeth Taylor at Tibberton on Nov 23, 1796. They christened one daughter Mary on June 18, 1797 but no sons.

There are a number of confusing records concerning Thomas Nibletts in the area. The first appears at Corse where a Thomas and Sarah christened a daughter Harriett on Sep 9, 1810. Thomas’s origins are unknown. In 1814 Thomas ⁽²⁾ married Anne Hooper on Oct 13, 1814 at Corse possibly as a second marriage. Thomas’s place of birth is recorded as Hasfield which is 3 miles from both Tirley and Corse. They christened James ⁽²⁾ Jan 29, 1815, Ann Jul 7, 1816 (married George Merriman Nov 11, 1841), James ⁽³⁾ Apr 2, 1820, Henry ⁽⁴⁾ Apr 2, 1820, Thomas ⁽⁵⁾ Oct 6, 1825, Eliza Dec 24, 1826 and Frances May 29, 1831. This family appears to have split up. It is likely that James ⁽²⁾ died young. Henry ⁽⁴⁾ a labourer is found at Staunton by the 1851 census and at Gloucester in 1881. Thomas ⁽⁵⁾, a shepherd, is at Southam in 1851. There is a record of a James who married Maria Rogers at Tewkesbury on Sep 5, 1850 in a reputedly second marriage but there is no obvious link to James ⁽³⁾. Thomas ⁽²⁾ b 1786 is shown as living with Ann Hooper b1781 in the 1841 census.

A further Thomas, born in Avening, probably in 1783 but also shown in censuses in 1789 married a Sarah around 1813 and moved to Tirley where they christened – Anne Oct 30 1814 (married John Missenger Apr 5, 1836) and then, Sarah born 1819 at Cheltenham, Mary Ann born 1819 and Mary christened Aug 31, 1822 at Tirley, Eliza born Tirley 1824 (married John Compton Oct 25, 1847) and Martha born Leckhampton 1830. By the 1841 census he is shown as married to an Elizabeth and living at Queens Place Cheltenham with Daughters Sarah B. 1821, Anne b 1825 and Martha B. 1831. These appear to be one and the same family. Elzabeth died c1843 as by 1851 Thomas was a widower living at Upper Bath St Cheltenham with his daughters Sarah and Martha.

The record of the family at Tirley begins with the arrival of Francis and Ann Penens who were married at Madresfield in Worcestershire on Jan 23, 1794. They moved to Great Malvern to produce and christen two sons James ⁽⁷⁾ May 13, 1796 and Thomas ⁽⁸⁾ Jun 10, 1798. Francis was from Great Malvern. The remainder of their family was christened at Tirley- Edward ⁽⁹⁾ Jan 25, 1801, Betty Jul 31, 1803, Richard ⁽¹⁰⁾ Apr 27, 1806, William ⁽¹¹⁾ Jun 26, 1808, Benjamin ⁽¹²⁾ Mar 17, 1811, Anne Dec 26, 1813and Francis ⁽¹³⁾ Jan 18, 1818. James ⁽⁷⁾ returned to Great Malvern and married Dora there on Dec 29, 1795 where they christened a daughter Lucy on Jul 16, 1797 (married David Faulkner at Minchinhampton on Oct 29, 1821. James probably married again to Theodosia and they christened James on Sep 26, 1802. Thomas ⁽⁸⁾ married Ann Vaughan at Chaceley on Jan 23, 1826. They christened two sons John ⁽¹⁹⁾ Nov 21, 1826 and James ⁽²⁰⁾ Sep 7, 1828 at Chaceley before moving back to Tirley where they christened – Elizabeth Jun 20, 1830, Frederick ⁽²¹⁾ Oct 14, 1832, Michael ⁽²²⁾ Dec 28, 1834, Sarah Anne Apr 9, 1836, Amelia Mar 22, 1840, William ⁽²³⁾ Aug 8, 1841, Elija ⁽²⁴⁾ Feb 16, 1845 and Jane Jun 10, 1849. This family then disappears from the record with the exception of Frederick ⁽²⁰⁾ who appeared at Bilston Staffs in the 1851 census. Edward ⁽⁹⁾ remained in Tirley and in the 1851 census was a hay trusser. William ⁽¹¹⁾ moved to Bath where he was in the 1851 census. Richard ⁽¹⁰⁾ probably moved to Great Malvern where he married Eliza and their daughter Eliza was born in 1834. She married William Rook on Jul 5, 1857. Benjamin ⁽¹²⁾ married Ann Trigg at Tirley on Sep 8, 1836 and went on to produce five children there before moving to Chaceley in Worcs where two further children were born. The children’s christenings were as follows- Hillary Dec 18, 1836; James ⁽³⁰⁾ Mar 16, 1838; William ⁽³¹⁾ born in 1840; Thomas ⁽³²⁾ Mar 21, 1841; George ⁽³³⁾ Apr 3, 1842; Henry ⁽³⁴⁾ Dec 17, 1842 and John ⁽³⁵⁾ July 25, 1845. It is likely that Francis ⁽¹³⁾ moved to Scotland where he married Eliza George.

James ⁽³⁰⁾ was at Chaceley in the 1851 census and George ⁽³³⁾ had married Priscilla Brotheridge at Tirley in the qtr to Mar 1868. They had six children at Chaceley- Frederick Benjamin ⁽⁷⁶⁾ c. May 30, 1869; Priscilla Ann c. Jan 8, 1871; Rose Edith c. Jun 9, 1872; George William ⁽⁷⁷⁾ c. Aug 10, 1873; Kate Louisa Aug 3, 1876 and Ada born in 1879. There is no further record of William ⁽³¹⁾ or Thomas ⁽³²⁾. James ⁽³³⁾ is likely to have married Sarah at Worcester around 1859 where they had four children – Charlotte b. 1860; Catherine b. 1862; Elizabeth b. 1864 and James b. 1866. Henry ⁽³⁴⁾ probably married Harriett at Ivington Hereford around 1871 and they had their first child Henry at Mobley in 1872. The family then seems to have moved to Kings Pion in Hereford where four further children were born- Charles 1873; Mary Ann 1876; Leonard 1879; and Beatrice 1881.

Edward ⁽⁹⁾ married Elizabeth French on Apr 10, 1830 at Tirley. They christened thirteen children there – William ⁽¹⁴⁾ born in 1824 from the 1841 census, Harriett Mar 27, 1825, Henry ⁽¹⁵⁾ June 9, 1826, Benjamin ⁽¹⁶⁾ Jan 30, 1828, Emma Apr 19, 1829, Elija ⁽¹⁷⁾ Nov 21, 1830, Eliza Nov 21, 1830, George ⁽¹⁸⁾ Apr 8, 1832, Edith Oct 13, 1833, Jane Jan 11, 1835, Rachel Mar 25, 1835 (married Edwin Sargeant Apr 9, 1871 at Reading), Caroline Jan 7, 1838 and Comfort May 19, 1839 (married John Sutherland Oct 6, 1867 at Whittington Worcester).

Another expatriate from Great Malvern, Henry married Sarah Bullock there on Sep 23, 1821 and moved to Tewkesbury where they christened Ann Jul 21, 1822 and Emma Jan 8, 1826.

One of the well known names in Cheltenham in the nineteenth century was that of Niblett & Co soda water and ginger ale manufacturers of Stroud and Cheltenham. The company was started by Charles Niblett born at Painswick in 1817. He married Selena Hunt as a widower on June 18, 1849 at Bristol. Selena is listed in the 1851 census as a bread and flour dealer while Charles is in London presumably on business. Charles died on July 25, 1881. His eldest son Charles James disappeared after the 1861 census and appeared later in Osnabroeck, Germany having married Anna Borstelman there in 1873. Charles’s son Alfred born in the qtr to Sept 1854 at Cheltenham is recorded as his father’s foreman in the census of 1881 but disappears in following censuses. No death is recorded in that period. Younger sons George 1859 and Harry 1866 later moved to the Birmingham area and it seems likely the bottling company went out of business following Charles’s death. Selina died at Cheltenham in the qtr to Dec 1890. Some of the bottles from that era are held by my own branch of the family and turn up from time to time in auctions. The company went into bankruptcy in 1873 and was likely acquired by Niblett and Co from Stroud, a separate branch of the family. Attached are a Company sign showing the award of a gold medals at the International Exhibition at Antwerp in 1911 and Paris in 1914 and a poster dated around 1901. A further picture shows the premises at Cheltenham Street, Swindon indicating the company was formed in 1845.

Another import to the area was George from Hawkesbury who married Mary Ann around 1841. They christened – Mary born 1842, Sarah born 1844, Clara born 1846, Charles ⁽⁴⁵⁾ born 1850, George ⁽⁴⁶⁾ born 1852, Emily born 1854 and Emma Susannah christened Jan 7, 1858. There is no further record of this family.
