Generally speaking,
persons who are already legally married to each other cannot go through a
further form or ceremony of marriage to each other, and it is an offence for
an authorised Civil Marriage Celebrant to purport to solemnise such a
ceremony
The Celebrant is
legally prevented from 'Remarrying' a couple.
The law as it
stands, prevents same sex couples marrying. The re-affirmation or Renewal
service is chosen by many to show the love and commitment between same sex
couples, who wish the same commitment and security as a heterosexual married
couple.
A re-affirmation Ceremony is also used when the couple cannot provide
proof of Divorce in time,- prior to the wedding ceremony taking place.
And is used to replace the Wedding Ceremony.
The re-affirmation
ceremony allows you to re-affirm your original marriage vows, promises and
commitment to each other and can be celebrated for various reasons:
Simply because you
want to re-affirm your love and commitment for each other.
To celebrate a
special wedding anniversary.
Perhaps you were
married overseas, or interstate, and you want your immediate family and
friends to be a part of your special occasion.
Re-affirmation
ceremonies can be composed by the Marriage Celebrant or the couple
themselves, there is no legal obligations for re-affirmation other than the
Celebrant warning the couple and the people assembled that what
follows is not a Marriage Ceremony but a reaffirmation or Renewal of vows
ceremony.
At the conclusion of
the ceremony the couple will be presented with a Certificate and a
copy of the ceremony.
