Dolly the Dolphin

Dolly is a pretty grey and white dolphin. She lives in the sea. She likes to swim and play and catch fish.

One day Dolly was swimming in the sea with her mother. When she put her head out of the water for air she could see something strange.

It was big and white.

It was not another dolphin. It was much too big to be a dolphin. It was a boat. It was a big boat. There were people in it.

Dolly had never seen people before. She did not know what they were. She swam around the boat and looked at it.

She put her head out of the water and looked at the people.

Her mother was swimming around the boat too. She had seen boats before. She had seen people before. She knew what they were.

The people in the boat looked at Dolly. They looked at her mother. They liked to see the dolphins swimming in the water.

They pointed and they cheered. They laughed and they clapped.

Dolly and her mother swam around the boat. They knew all the people were looking at them. They jumped out of the water and splashed back into it.

They were showing off for the people.

All the people were cheering for the dolphins. They cheered and they clapped.

When Dolly's mother got tired of the people watching them she swam away. She went to find some fish to eat.

Dolly liked showing off for the people. She did not swim away to find some fish. She stayed by the boat.

She swam around. She put her head out of the water and looked at the people.

Dolly made a whistling sound and some clicking sounds. The people clapped her because they thought she was clever.

When Dolly swims under the water she makes sounds like this so she can tell where fish were. The sounds bounce off the fish so she can find them and eat them. This is how dolphins can find fish.

Dolly could tell there was something else under the water. It was not a little fish. It was big. It was bigger than she was.

It was swimming towards the boat. She dived under the water to see what it was. Was it another dolphin?

Oh dear! It was a shark. It was a big shark. It was a big hungry shark. It could smell Dolly in the water. Dolly could not smell the shark, but she could see it.

Sharks and dolphins do not like each other. Sharks are big and hungry all the time. They eat anything they can find.

Dolly was frightened. She did not know where her mother was. Her mother had gone away to catch some fish.

The people in the boat could see the shark in the water. They did not cheer for the shark. They did not clap for the shark.

The people did not like the shark. People are frightened of sharks too. They shouted at the shark. Some of them threw things at it.

The shark swam around the boat. It knew there was a little dolphin in the water. It wanted to eat the little dolphin. It was hungry.

Dolly swam around and around. She made lots of whistling sounds and clicks. She slapped her tail on the water.

Dolly's mother was a long way away, but she could hear Dolly under the water. She came swimming back towards the boat. Some of the other dolphins came back with her.

The shark wanted to eat the little dolphin, but he did not want a lot of big dolphins chasing after him.

The big shark was frightened now. He was angry too. He wanted the little dolphin for dinner but he was going to get chased away instead.

All of the people in the boat cheered when the dolphins came along. The shark was not happy. It swam away. They cheered and they clapped and they called out. They thought the dolphins were very clever and very brave.

Dolly and her mother jumped out of the water. They waved their tails. They made whistling sounds and clicking sounds.

Dolly and her mother and all the rest of the dolphins swam around the boat three times. They looked like they were smiling.

They jumped out of the water. Each dolphin took a big breath of air. They cannot breathe under the water.

Then all of the dolphins swam away. Dolly had liked swimming around and showing off for the people but she was glad to swim away with her mother and the other dolphins. She did not like sharks. She did not want to meet another shark.
