Fred and Frog Learn Their Fives

Fred and Frog are in year four. They need to know their five times table.

"First," says Fred, "We have to count by fives."

"Oh, that's easy," says Frog. "I can do that."

"Of course you can. So can I," says Fred. They count:

"Five, ten, fifteen, twenty

Twenty five, thirty,

thirty five, forty,

forty five, fifty!"

This time can you count with them?

Here are the numerals instead of the words:

5,10,15,20

25, 30, 35, 40,

45, 50!

"All right then," cried Fred. "I'll go first!

Once five is five, and two fives are ten."

Frog went on: "Three fives are fifteen and four fives are twenty."

Fred's turn: "Five fives are twenty five and six fives are thirty."

They said the rest together: "Seven fives are thirty five,

Eight fives are forty, nine fives are forty five -

And ten fives are fifty!"

"We should write that in numerals," said Fred. So they wrote it:

1 x 5 = 5
2 x 5 = 10
3 x 5 = 15
4 x 5 = 20
5 x 5 = 25
6 x 5 = 30
7 x 5 = 35
8 x 5 = 40
9 x 5 = 45
10 x 5 = 50

"Wow! Look!" said Frog. Look at all the fives and zeroes!

"Hey, yeah!" cried Fred. "Every answer ends in a five or a zero."

"That's right," agreed Frog. He stared at the numerals again and grinned. "If it's an odd number times five, it ends in a five."

"And if it's an even number times five it ends in a zero," Fred cried.

"That's going to help me remember my five times table."

Fred and Frog counted by fives again.

You can find them and count by fives too.

They read through their five times table again.

You can find it and read through it too.

Then you can try the fives on the next page.

Remember every answer ends in a five or a zero!

2 x 5 =
1 x 5 =
4 x 5 =
3 x 5 =
6 x 5 =
5 x 5 =
8 x 5 =
7 x 5 =
10 x 5 =
9 x 5 =

Now they are jumbled up. Be careful!

7 x 5 =
3 x 5 =
6 x 5 =
2 x 5 =
5 x 5 =
8 x 5 =
1 x 5 =
10 x 5 =
4 x 5 =
9 x 5 =

"We know some of our six times and seven times

and eight times and nine times as well," Fred told Frog.

"How come?" asked Frog

"Well, look! I know that 5 x 6 is the same as 6 x 5,

so if 6 x 5 = 30, then 5 x 6 = 30, too!"

"Oh yeah," agreed Frog. "That's right. So 7 x 5 = 35,

and 5 x 7 = 35 as well."

"Yes! And 8 x 5 = 40 and 5 x 8 = 40 too.

9 x 5 = 45, and 5 x 9 = 45.

Hey, we didn't just learn our fives, we learned some of the other tables as well."

Fred and Frog were very pleased with themselves.

They counted by fives again. Count with them:

5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 - 55, 60!

That's 11 x 5 and 12 x 5 as well!!
