Direction Island is probably the most beautiful of all the islands. It has a sheltered bay and is host to many seafarers from around the world to lay in wait or to recharge the batteries whilst bad weather passes. The water is the most beautiful aquamarine colour to be seen almost anywhere and an extremely safe beach. On Saturdays the inter-island ferry picks people up and takes them for the day to be spent relaxing and taking in all the island has to offer; a safe jetty, a shelter, telephone, tank water, clean safe beach and of course the famous "rip". The world renowned "rip" on the southern corner, is a strong current in a gap in the reef where ocean water is continually flowing into the atoll and a safe place for snorkelers to be carried along through water full of the most colourful tropical fish ever imagined. Although once the site of a very important cable station for contact from Australia to the outside world through South Africa and Singapore, the island is now uninhabited and available for camping and recreation for all.
