Horsburgh Island is the northern most island of the South Keeling Island Group and is the most difficult to get to as it doesnt have an easy beach to land on because of the "bombies" which are large coral outcrops just below the surface of the water. On high tide its isn't so difficult and it is a good place to camp or fish. During the last war the Ceylon Garrison Artillery set up camp and erected two six inch guns to protect the Island from a perceived threat from the Japanese. These two guns are still there, one still standing and one laying on the beach. Because Ceylon's (Sri Lanka's) ties with England and her national sport a cricket pitch was laid for the troops to play sport. Click Here to return to the Links page. |
