West Island is by far the biggest of the islands and once grew the best coconuts of the Clunies-Ross plantation. Until the island was taken up during the Second World War as a strategic airstrip there were no permanent inhabitants living there.
Now a strategical located airstrip for servicing the Army and Air Force as well as customs and coastal surveillance who use it on a constant basis. In fact there is a radar station manned by the RAAF because of its important position in the Indian Ocean.
The International Airport and most of the tourist accomodation is also situated here as is the Tourist Bureau and Telecentre. There are a range of outlets including the General Store, hire shops for bikes and cars, diving gear, clothing, restuarants and duty free as Cocos is in a duty free area. World class diving, fishing, and glass bottomed boat tours are available for all your water sport needs.
