Legal marriage requirements......

In accordance with the Australian Marriage Act 1961, the Notice of Intended Marriage form may be completed and be valid for up to eighteen months before the marriage, but should be completed at least one calendar month prior to the date of your marriage.

At least one of you MUST be over the age of 18, and if one party IS under 18, both parental AND court permission to marry must be given.

You must not be in a prohibited relationship and of course you cannot already be legally married.

For identification and proof of age each of you will need to provide the following original papers (not copies or scans):

  • Birth certificate if born in Australia
  • Overseas birth certificates and / or passport, if applicable
  • Divorce (absolute) papers, if either party has been married before
  • Death certificate if either party had a spouse who is now deceased

You will also need two people over the age of 18 to act as witnesses to the marriage. Witnesses do not have to be part of your bridal party.

Creating your ceremony

Further appointments

At least one more appointment is necessary to :

  • Discuss and edit the ceremony if necessary.
  • Pay any balance of fees.
  • Complete further official documents before the wedding day.

Rehearsals

Wedding rehearsals are encouraged as they ensure things run more smoothly on the actual day. For example, so that everyone knows where they will be positioned, and when certain people have to do readings or present rings etc.

Rehearsals at the actual wedding venue will incur a further cost.

On the wedding day

  • The ceremony takes place at your chosen venue.
  • Official legal documents are signed.
  • The Marriage Certificate and a printed copy of the ceremony are presented to you as a keepsake of the wedding.

After the wedding day

All the required paperwork for your marriage is registered with the Registrar-General’s Office, Perth, WA
