Research interests

  • Tectonic and igneous processes at oceanic spreading centres, through the study of ophiolites (Othris, Oman, Dariv) and Macquarie Island.
  • Physical and chemical characteristics of melt transport through the (oceanic) mantle and into the crust.
  • The effect of melt on the deformation behaviour and rheology of mantle rocks.
  • The development of tectonite and mylonite shear zones in mantle peridotites.
  • Accretionary orogenesis with emphasis on the Paleozoic Altaids Orogen in Western Mongolia.

Image (right): Macquarie Island AIRSAR images showing fault scarps related to present-day dextral transtensional/releasing bend setting. (A) Detail of the Prion Lake area. Arrows mark prominent fault scarps bounding the Prion Lake basin. (B) Detail of Major Lake area. Arrows mark a system of NW-SE and NNE-SSW trending faults. The former are re-activated seafloor structures that are affected by hydrothermal alteration and mineralization typical for oceanic spreading centres (S. Lewis, pers. comm., 2004). From: Tapley, Dijkstra & Brolsma, in press 2004.
