With a full year of research and too many hours of gameplay behind me, this huge theory paper was delivered in three forms: bound book, website, and CD with extended gallery of media.
The web version of i am (not) me can be viewed from here now in a new tab/window.
It explores the dimensions of players, the videogames they play -- as designed and constructed places for experience through some character, and the effects they have on each other having been merged for the actual gameplay experience. An obvious focus is the composition of identity, interpretations and understanding of the world(s), and the realities of intangibles. Research on the physical effects on growth and body development is touched upon too. It totals a mass of 22,000 words plus supporting media.
Phantasy Star Online (Episode I) [Sega/Sonic Team, 2000-2004, Sega Dreamcast], NiGHTS into Dreams [Sega/Sonic Team, 1997, Sega Saturn], and the wipEout racing series [Psygnosis, 1997-2002, Sony Playstation and Sega Saturn] become prime references. They even revealed some interesting issues themselves which lead to more research. If you've played some of these games, it'll be a tad easier to understand. If not, then make use of the reams of supportive media provided on the CD edition. The entire text is currently available online though. More than enough to get you thinking.
This is my dissertation, completing my Bachelor of Arts: Design Honours.
