Resume Layout and Tweaking Tips

Without doubt the most common question from people looking to create a resume and begin job searching is, “How can I make my resume stand out?” What they really mean is, “How can I differentiate myself from all the other job searchers out there?”

There’s a multitude of ways to make your resume or CV different from the majority, both positively and negatively.

If you had your CV engraved on marble tablets and delivered by horse-drawn carriage, you’d definitely stand out, though I’m not too sure whether it would be a positive thing for most employers. However, if the employer is a marble tablet engraving company, this sort of custom tailored resume may be just the ticket. More about that later.

Some points to keep in mind while creating your masterpiece:

  • Be positive and passionate.
  • Identify your career goals and market yourself along that line.
  • Be honest, but proud of your experience.
  • Stress transferable skills; Two years at McDonalds is actually two years of customer service and cash handling in an intense, fast-paced retail food environment.
  • Blow your own horn. Don't expect people to read between the lines. You need to tell them about your successes and achievements.
  • Ask friends, family and co-workers what they think are your best qualities or skills. Get feedback.
  • Don't overstate your qualifications, experience, skills or capabilities.
