Condingup Welcomes YouThe Condingup townsite is located in a wheat, cattle and grain area 65 kms east of Esperance and 20 kms from the Duke of Orleans Bay.Condingup was declared a townsite in 1963. It takes its name from the nearby Condingup Peak. What does Condingup mean? It is an Aboriginal term and official records say the meaning is unknown, but the name has been recorded as long ago as 1875-6 when the telegraph line surveyors passed through. The local aboriginal community feel that the name is most likely a corruption of "Kunjinup" the name of the local red wildflower.
About 70 very privileged people live here, employed as farmers, rural workers, teachers and shire workers. The growing popularity of the townsite is attested to by the fact that people are choosing to retire to this community. |
