Smoke Alarms

* Smoke alarms must be checked once a week.
* If your smoke alarm is not hard wired, make sure you have a spare battery on hand.

kitchen

In the Kitchen

* Keep matches away from children.
* Be especially careful when using fat or cooking oil in the kitchen. If a fire does occur, a damp towel will give a few extra minutes to find something more substantial to cover the fire. A wooden chopping board or pot lid can be used.
* Turn handles inward but make sure they do not extend over a lit burner or element.

living room

In the Living Room

* An open fire should ALWAYS have a securely attached fine mesh spark screen in front of it. Remember to screen all heaters. Many people have been burnt from falling onto heaters.
* Remember not to place a heater to close to curtains or furniture, but in a position were it wont be tripped over.
* Have chimneys and flues regularly cleaned at least once a year.
* Avoid the use off double adaptors where possible and don't overload power boards.
bedroom

In the Bedroom

* Keep heaters well away from flammable materials such as curtains and clothes.
* Unplug heaters before you go to bed.
* Never smoke in bed.
* Don't overload power points or boards.
