It’s not a protest!
It’s a celebration, of bicycles and riding. It’s about
saying just how much we love our city, how much we love riding our
bicycles through our city.
We meet once a month on the last Friday of every month at the
steps below the State Library at 6.00pm, ride starts 6.30pm.
What is Critical Mass in Perth?
The idea behind it is to promote cycling as a means of transport
in the city and to have an enjoyable ride with like minded people.
It is not a fast ride. It is not a protest. It is all about enjoying
cycling through this beautiful city and letting other people know
what a great way to travel it is.
It is also part of something much larger. Critical Mass takes place
in cities all over the world.
Generally, since its conception, it has been about riding your bicycle
(or any other form of human powered transport) around the city in
which you live on the last Friday of every month. However Critical
Mass is different all over the world. For example in Budapest Critical
Mass is only held twice a year and attracts around 10,000 participants,
in other places (like here in Perth) it is a monthly event involving
smaller numbers.
This freedom is a defining feature of the movement and there is
no fixed route nor a leader. As they say; 'Critical Mass is not
an organization, it's an unorganized coincidence. It's a movement
... of bicycles, in the streets.'
