TUNING YOUR TOMS

As with tuning snares and bass drums, tuning your toms comes down to personal taste. What works best for me is as follows.

I tune the batter head first and I tune for the best sound of the drum rather than a certain note. I criss cross to each lug as I tension and press my thumb approximately 1'' in from the lug as I tune, making sure each has the same tension. I then tap approximately 1'' in from each lug with a stick, tweaking the lugs until each has the same tone.

I then strike the drum in the centre and fine tune for the desired sound.

I tune the bottom head the same tension, repeating as above.

Some drummers have their bottom heads slightly tighter or visa versa. Experiment and find what's best for you.

After I have repeated the above on each drum, I play a simple roll from highest to lowest tom. I make sure the toms are evenly spaced in sound, high to low. I then fine tune to the desired sound and repeat the tapping in 1'' from each lug process.

I like my drums to have a nice singing tone to them. If there is a nasty ring, it usually means a lug has incorrect tension. If all lugs are even and there is still a ring, I may resort to placing a little gaffa tape on the drum in question, but only as a last resort. Many drummers I speak to refuse to use any dampening whatsoever on their toms or snare drum.

When tuning its a good idea to have patience and take your time. Remember you are creating your own sound and signature. Don't be frightened to experiment, listen to as many experienced drummers as you can. Approach them and ask about tuning tips, you will be surprised how willing they will be to part with information.
