Threes

Things always happen in threes. The good, the bad, the ugly, the broken. My grandmother, who was of Irish descent and passed on many of the old superstitions to Isabel and then to me, used to say that if you broke something like a plate, to immediately break two matches to get the total disasters or breakages up to three.

I only scoffed at and ignored this superstition the once. That once was enough. First I smashed a favourite bone china cup, then I fell really hard in the shower, somehow managing to break my foot, and finally I had my wallet stolen. All on the same day. Rule of three, yeah.

Then there are all the other totally automatic responses I have, to ward off evil and pure bad luck. Like throwing spilled salt over your left shoulder. Never ever ever opening umbrellas inside the house, or putting brand new shoes on the table, or leaving the house by a different door than the one you came in. Probably they all stem from a mix of superstitious beliefs, paganism and practicality. I mean, I can totally see why you shouldn’t open an umbrella inside the house ["oops, sorry, you still have one eye left so stop whinging"]; the salt thing is probably a libation to the gods; but new shoes on the table? Anyone know where that came from?

Today however, three GOOD things happened.

  1. I received my parcel from amazon.com with my 'naughty books' so I am already much enlightened, thank you;

  2. I found out the redundancy package figures and was rather surprised that the figures exceeded my guesstimate by some $$$ ; and

  3. my domain name was activated. www.bagatelle.uk.com has had a long gestation period but labour itself was fast and painless.

WAHEY!!!

All above items are exciting, thus cancelling out my bleaugghhh weekend ... but which would you say is more exciting in the long run; 1,2 or 3? Actually they are all pretty much interlinked ... hmmmm ... the Brandy Alexander of karmic cocktails eh.

I don’t quite know why but I’m finding it really difficult to write at the moment, which shows, I’m positive. And not just in the lack of entries! Its mostly due to lack of discipline, I think. Being disciplined enough to settle down to write a couple of hundred words every day or so is new. Being disciplined to write anything that isn’t work- or study-related is new. But oh it so much fun and bounce-worthy. There is still so much I want to do, like learning more and doing this straight in html (at the moment I’m kinda fudging around with FrontPage which is embarrassing to admit – it’s like the geek version of "I have genital warts".), make it more visually attractive (I deliberately worked on content first, figured I could pretty it up later), and of course – write better and stop using so many effing parentheses!

Even though I’ve only been ‘up’ for a few days I’ve already had lots of good feedback which is great. Okay so I probably only have three readers and they are people who know me and therefore have to say nice things, but its encouraging all the same!
