TOMÁS FORD’S JULY > YOURS
Yes, Party Shall Be Had.
My next month is going to be so much better than your next month. Sure, the first half is going to be kind of boring. But on the 16th, I get on a plane to Canberra and the party funtimes BEGIN. Well, wether being in Canberra means party funtimes yet is yet to be seen. But it doesn’t matter. I’m only there for long enough to look at Blue Poles, rock the house and then go to Sydney for a show and then Melbourne for a bit and then Bendigo for a night and then Hobart and then Melbourne and then home for a big show at Shape to get some closure on the whole situation. Partying all the way.

Well, not all the way. I suppose some of the way. It’s “partying all the way”, if by that you mean “waking up most days at 7 to go do a breakfast radio interview and then catch a train or plane somewhere”. Which isn’t really the same thing. But it’s in the ballpark. I won’t be getting much sleep, which is a bit like partying. But it’s also a bit like parenting. Which isn’t much like partying at all except that they both start with the letter P. But so do “piker”, “prunes”, “poise” and “Pygmalion” and they’re nothing like partying unless it’s opposites day. Which it’s not.

I’m rambling. Next section. Moving along.

SOMEBODY SHUT ME UP
A,

Life has been pretty rad this month.

My MIDI Controller situation, as discussed somewhat grumpily in a previous Distractomatic, finally came to a close. After all that went down, I emailed him a few times to say if he sent me the cash to post it back to him I’d be happy to send it back; he just sent me an email yesterday saying that I COULD KEEP IT bec au se he’s moving house and can’t be bothered selling it again. I CAN KEEP IT. FOR FREE. I’m all like “Egads! Awesome!! ZOMG!!!” and stuff. I still can’t wipe the smile off my face. What a wonderful world (occasionally).

The tour’s coming together pretty well (touch wood) and everything, for a change, appears to be running to schedule. (Touch wood. Again.) The poster and the press release both took me a long time to get right, but I’m somewhere in the vicinity of satisfied with them. Now it’s just pure street pimpin’ from now until I go. And I can pimp. Da pimpin’ is easy.

I’m on rather good live form at the moment, so I’m extremely totally pumped to be going away. I’ve got a bit of a break before then, which is good ‘cos I want to change a few things around in the set before I go away to take the shows to the next level of awesomeness. I’ve got some new material and I’m trying a few new physical ideas out at the moment. Not to mention that I’ve got me ma squirreled away, working on some costumes for me to ass au lt people in.

By the way, last month’s Distractomatic went out before I proofread it, so if you were wondering why I all of sudden stopped mid-sentence every so often or misspelled things in a slightly avant-garde way, that’s probably why. Although it’s also very possible that I either just didn’t notice or that left all that stuff in to piss you off. I like to keep a slight air of ambiguity about myself.  And I’m lazy. Actually, it’s probably just that I can be a little lazy and it was 2am or something and I wanted to go to bed.

Z,

Tomás

THINGS THAT SUCK

THINGS TO DO IN A SEPARATE WINDOW WHILE YOU SURF PORN SITES
Learn To Love Casio With Your New Friend Casionova

http://www.casionova.org
I’m playing with Casionova in Melbourne at the Wesley Anne date. From what I can ascertain, he’s pretty much the man. He makes dope pop songs using nothing but Casio products. Look through the writeups he’s done on casio gear. It made me feel all sentimental towards my little casiotones; my MT-35 has a warm, pretty vibraphone sound and I can’t believe I never noticed it before.

Endure Eurovision

http://www.sbs.com.au/eurovision
I can’t believe Russia won with their totally crap entry (well, not totally crap; the ice skater was pretty cool), especially when France ’s Sébastien Tellier absolutely rocked me with Divine. You really, really have to track down his album Sexuality, by the way. It’s French slow jamz for tha bitchez as produced by Guy Man from Daft Punk. That’s not the point of this though; the point is that SBS will let you stream every entry and bitch about them on message boards. Totally fun. My personal top 3:

#3: Pokusaj – Laka ( Bosnia & Herzegovina ) - http://www.sbs.com.au/eurovision/country/359
You’ve gotta love a country where they hear this and say “THAT’S A HIT”!!! The performance is totally whacked out musical theatre, too.

#2: Shady Lady – ( Ukraine ) - http://www.sbs.com.au/eurovision/country/371
Come on, the light boxes are cool. And the little head nods are hilarious. Still, it feels too much like a Holly Valance song to be #1.

#1: Sébastien Tellier – Divine ( France ) - http://www.sbs.com.au/eurovision/country/347
A class above everything else on offer. Ironic, intelligent and sexy. There’s lots of really well executed weird comedy in the performance.

Download Talkshow Boy’s Free Testosterone LP
http://pocketclock.org/releases/cl007.html

Talkshow Boy is another Melbourne solo-ist. He makes 8-bit glitchcore pop stuff (ie kind of what Crystal Castles do but he’s been doing this stuff for years). This link will take you to a free download of his album “Testosterone”, which is brilliant and has some great random pop culture samples and funny lyrics scattered through it. It’s a little harshly mastered though, so give it a bit of time to settle in before passing judgement. Totally worth the effort though.

AGING RECORDS YOU SHOULD TOTALLY SCORE OFF OF BITTORRENT
Bjork – Medulla
Chances are that if you like my stuff you probably like Bjork, but just in case you don’t, this album is a good one. It’s the one with all the sampled throat singing on it, which makes it sound scary and pretentious but it’s not as bad as it seems. There’s a lot of people who pretend not to like it bec au se their friends think it’s pretentious though. Which is totally mega-pretentious.

B(if)tek – 2020
All three of their albums are really interesting. Cute, tasteful Australian techno that reveals hidden layers and pockets of energy every time I listen to it. Even their cover of Cliff Richard’s Wired For Sound is the bomb.

Pet Shop Boys, Actually
Their best album. There, I said it. Sure, Behaviour is more polished and has So Hard on it, Very was a high point of camp early 90’s electropop and their real best albums are their Greatest Hits collections, but this was their songwriting peak. It has What Have I Done To Deserve This?, which is only like the best 80’s pop song ever. And It’s A Sin. And Rent. And Heart. I bought this from the second hand shop up the road last weekend and I love it like it’s related to me.

"Unless you enjoy sitting through talentless, purposeless tripe or would just like a reminder as to how sane you actually are, give this one a miss completely. "

UPCOMING TOMAS FORD ACTION
THURSDAY JUNE 5
DEUCE
VELVET LOUNGE, MT LAWLEY WA
With Voltaire Twins + Turbine 37
Totally worth a look if you’re into any kind of electronic music, Deuce’s monthly residency features the best performers from the local live electronica scene. This week, the best happens to include me and two other acts who have both been working on remixes for me that will be out very soon. Voltaire Twins rock their synthy pop and Turbine 37 rocks the mad breakbeats.

THURSDAY JUNE 12
COTTONMOUTH V
BAR 459, ROSEMOUNT HOTEL ,  MT  LAWLEY WA
As I said last issue, the may edition of Cottonmouth SOLD OUT. So get in nice and early-like to secure your standing room for the most partytastic spoken word gig in history. Laptop glitching lullaby maker Stina will be the special musical guest, with spoken word from Braydon Harriss, John Stubley, Simon Cox, Kate Anna-Williams, Patrick Pittman, Salamanda Strong, Jimmy Jack and personal favourite Gabrielle Everall.

SATURDAY JUNE 14
WE ARE ONE (MC/DJ ONLY)
THE BAKERY, NORTHBRIDGE WA
Between sets by some of the raddest Perth indie kids. This gig is $30 to get into, but it’ll be a fun one if you’re into the bands. I can maybe tell you the surprise headliner if you drop me an email; I can only offer you hints in this newsletter though, so all I’ll tell you is that they’re a national band from Perth that my younger brother made me watch instead of watching M.I.A. at the Big Day Out a couple of years ago. Actually, I’ve been forced to watch them play a few times. Zack Adams made me watch them in Adelaide at some random O-Day gig once as well. Which was kind of nice bec au se I was feeling homesick and they reminded me of Perth . I guess I like some of their stuff, but I’m not really the target market for it. Anyway, it’ll be fun. I’m going to be dj’ing and dribbling shit between sets and who knows what else.
