A late goal from Zayaleta saw a virtual reserve Juventus team beat Arsenal 1-0 and dump the Gunners out of the Champions League, not helped by Bayer Leverkusen winning 3-1 against Deportivo La Coruna and ultimately finishing top of the group.

The first half saw little in the way of chances, with Arsenal wasting what opportunities did arrive.

Thierry Henry was the main culprit, slotting wide after Freddie Ljungberg had sent him clear, and then on half time he almost dispossessed keeper Carini after he's miscontrolled a back pass. Robert Pires also side footed wide having been sent through by Henry as Arsenal's finishing let them down.

Juve's second string created little, although Guzman did fire wide from a tricky angle, whilst Maresca drilled a long range effort straight at David Seaman.

The second half began with Arsenal being awarded a penalty after Henry was judged to have been tripped by Birindelli, however the Frenchman, who missed a spot kick against Deportivo last week, could only watch in horror as Carini pushed his effort against the post to safety.

Henry then shot wide having beaten his man for pace, but the vital breakthrough simply wouldn't come.

As news filtered through that Deportivo had pulled a goal back against Bayer, Arsenal had hope, but within a minute, they blew it. Juve won a corner on the left and as it was swung away from goal, Zalayeta met the ball with a fine header and found the corner perfectly.

Ljungberg was then denied by Carini before Henry found space only to slot the ball wide of the far post again, but when Bayer added a third in Spain, the qualification hopes died for the Gunners.
