JUVENTUS - PANATHINAIKOS 2-1

Tuesday 19 Sep 2000, kick-off 7:45PM CET

The fans had turned out in force at the Delle Alpi for the visit of Panathinaikos – and they weren’t disappointed, thanks to a late winner from David Trezeguet.

The 35,000 in the stands watched as Juve took the lead on 35 minutes thanks to a fine goal from Alessio Tacchinardi whose long-range shot rebounded off the bar, onto the goalkeeper’s back and finally ended in the net.

Despite the fact that the Serie A season is still a fortnight away, Carlo Ancelotti’s side looked in good form, with Zinedine Zidane, Filippo Inzaghi and Alessandro Del Piero linking up well. Not even that formidable forward trio, however, could find a way past an impressively solid Greek defence. Equally efficient was the Bianconero back line, with Michele Paramatti and Gianluca Pessotto on the flanks, Ciro Ferrara and Igor Tudor in the centre, showing that they haven’t lost their sense of timing over the summer break. Repeatedly they anticipated forward runs from the Greek strike partnership of Liberopoulos and Warzycha, whose combined forces fully tested Van der Sar towards the end of the first half. Panathinaikos’ pressure finally paid off two minutes into time added on when Goumas imitated Tacchinardi’s effort with a superb long-range shot that left Van der Sar stranded.

Carlo Ancelotti opted for change in the opening quarter-of-an-hour of the second half, replacing Pessotto with Jonathan Bachini, Antonio Conte with Alessandro Birindelli and Del Piero with Trezeguet. Needless to say, the Bianconero faithful reserved a special applause for the exit of the number 10.

But it seemed that little was doing. An Edgar Davids free-kick was cleared for a corner and a Zidane header rattled against the hoardings. It looked as though the Bianconeri were going to have to content themselves with a solitary point. Trezeguet, however, had other ideas.

Juventus’ big summer signing, still radiant from his Euro 2000 success, again did what he does best – making no mistake in front of goal. The level of this man’s efficiency and his power to win matches when time seems to be running out is becoming frightening. As Bachini dispatched a well-weighted corner, the Frenchman rose to head home the winner. Nobody can say that he isn’t living up to his reputation.
