JUVENTUS 0 - 0 DEPORTIVO

Tuesday 26 Sep 2000, kick-off 8:45PM CET

Juventus had to be satisfied with a point at the Delle Alpi on Tuesday night, where Carlo Ancelotti’s side were frustrated by an intransigent Deportivo La Coruna.

The Spanish champions aim to pick up where Real Madrid and Valencia left off in last season’s UEFA Champions League. And here they hinted at a serious threat to the Bianconeri’s Group E ambitions.

Not that Javier Irureta’s team would have a comfortable time of it in Turin. This much was clear from the moment Nourredine Naybet denied Filippo Inzaghi with a spectacular double clearance on 16 minutes.

The two players took centre-stage again on the half-hour. Running clear of the away defence, Inzaghi was thwarted first by goalkeeper José Molina, then by the covering Naybet.

It was not all Juventus, however. Striker Turu Flores proved a real handful to Ciro Ferrara and Co, and twice threatened Edwin Van der Sar’s goal in the opening period. The Holland international made a fine save at the feet of Flores on 29 minutes, and also had his wits about him to keep out the Argentine’s free-kick shortly before half-time.

And while David Trezeguet tested Molina after the restart, following a neat interchange involving Alessio Tacchinardi and Zinedine Zidane, Bianconeri hopes foundered on the 68th-minute dismissal of their France playmaker.

Zidane was shown a straight red card for his scything challenge on Deportivo midfielder Emerson. The decision may have seemed harsh, but the visitors were not complaining. With a one-man advantage, the Riazor outfit held out for a valuable point.
