JUVENTUS - BARI 1-0
Sunday 15 Oct 2000, kick-off 3:00PM CET
It was the dream start for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, who chose to ignore their injury problems and went ahead early on thanks to a goal from the big Yugoslav, who would probably not have got a starting place had Filippo Inzaghi been fit. Edgar Davids found Zinedine Zidane in space out on the left, and Kovacevic converted the subsequent cross, giving Generoso Rossi, between the sticks for Bari, no chance.
Zizou had a hand in the first and then assured the Bianconeri of the points in injury time by converting a penalty, procured by Antonio Conte, who was brought down in the box by Giuseppe Mazzarelli.
The pre-match news from the Bianconeri sick bay was not reassuring, with both Filippo Inzaghi and Alessandro Del Piero having to sit out Juve's first home match of the season against Fascetti's Bari, having failed to recover from the 'flu.
Enzo Maresca was also unavailable, for the same reason. Alessio Tacchinardi on the other hand made it as far as the bench.
A number of other players were also missing: Paolo Montero (groin strain), Michele Paramatti (muscle problems), Gianluca Zambrotta (operation to his meniscus) and Fabian O'Neil (return of a niggling muscle problem).
So, with a squad decimated by injuries, this is the team that was put out by Carlo Ancelotti: Alessandro Birindelli, Ciro Ferrara and Mark Iuliano lining-up in a back three. Jonathan Bachini and Gianluca Pessotto going wide with Edgar Davids and Antonio Conte in partnership in the centre. Up front Zinedine Zidane sat in the hole behind birthday boy David Trezeguet and Darko Kovacevic.
Subs: Michelangelo Rampulla, Marco Zanchi, Igor Tudor, Matteo Brighi, Alessio Tacchinardi, Daniel Fonseca, Juan Esnaider.
Bari put their trust in the partnership of Swedish international Yksel Osmonovski and 18-year-old prodigy Antonio Cassano. Fascetti also didn't have things all his own way, with a number of withdrawals of his own: Michele Marcolini, Phil Masinga, and Rodolfo Giorgetti.
JUVENTUS (3-4-1-2): Van der Sar; Birindelli, Ferrara, Iuliano; Bachini, Conte, Davids, Pessotto; Zidane; Kovacevic, Trezeguet. (Rampulla, Tudor, Zanchi, Tacchinardi, Brighi, Fonseca, Esnaider). Manager. Ancelotti.
