Ciro Ferrara's Words
Ciro Ferrara is starting his eighth season at Juve and his eighteenth in total as a regular choice in Seria A. Having turned 34 last February, Ciro is preparing for the season, looking ahead at his prospects with great calmness and maturity."Compared to the past, I know that I will play less, but this doesn't upset me. Juve has many great players, almost all internationals, and it is normal that the club is looking to the future. I feel that I'm still an important player here, otherwise why would the club have kept me? My appearances will be less, but I'm sure that I will get the opportunity to play, especially as physically I'm still okay, and I'm not lacking in determination".
"I also feel that I've been lucky. I started my career very young, and I've always managed to stay at the highest level. However, eventually you have to face reality, and your age. That is the only problem I have. Perhaps if I had changed teams, I could have continued to be a first-team regular, but I din't want to do that; it would be hard to leave the best club in the country. There was a time last year that I thought about leaving, but then Ancelotti sorted everything out. I'm pleased though that Lippi has returned; he's a coach I know well. Despite that it wasn't his return that made me decide to stay; the decision had already been made".
Ferrara is very clear about his future: "At the end of this season, my contract runs out. At some stage during the season I will definately talk with the directors about the situation, and I hope to stay here. I'm looking to play for another season after this one. If the directors have other ideas, perhaps I would think of going abroad, because if you leave Juve and stay in Italy, you can only take a step down. Juventus are even above most foreign clubs, but al least that would be a different experience".
And he concludes: "Rumours about me returning to Napoli can stop now; they have a lot of problems, that aren't just going to be resolved by the return of one player. I'm sorry for the problems that Napoli are in, but I'd rather that the fans there remember me as I was in the past".
