11/29/2001. Juventus once again
transformed themselves from struggling Serie A side into European powerhouse as
they thrashed Champions League rivals Bayer Leverkusen 4-0 on Thursday
afternoon.
The game, that was originally scheduled to kickoff last Wednesday, was finally
able to take place this afternoon after thick fog once again forced an ulterior
postponement last night.
The home side immediately began to dominate the match, demonstrating that
despite they have enormous problems faring well in league action, where they
have won only one match in their past seven outings, in Continental action it's
a whole different story.
The one similarity between league and European action in the Bianconeri side was
the umpteenth excellent performance by French striker David Trezeguet whose
goals on either side of the break began and ended Juventus’ scoring spree.
Trezeguet also acted a as a superb assist man for the black and white outfit, as
he supplied Del Piero in the play that brought to Juve’s second of the
afternoon, thereby exchanging favours with the Juve skipper whose elegant cross
had allowed the Frenchmen to head home Juve’s lead in the 7th minute.
Also Nedved, who together with Del Piero desperately needed to bounce back from
last Saturday’s lackluster performance in the Stadio Olimpico, contributed to
Juve’s goal feast at it was thanks to his perfect incursion inside the box
that Trezeguet was able to clinch his second of the afternoon.
On their part Bayer were only able to threathen Juve during the middle of the
first half, but all their comeback hopes were thwarted by Igor Tudor’s goal on
the stoke of halftime that allowed Juve to seal the game off even before the
second half kicked off.
With the three points Juve join Deportivo at the top of the Group D table, while
Bayer share the last place with Premiership outfit Arsenal.
