Thanks to Symantec and Sophos for allowing this information to be available in this manner..

This is to help you find out what is eating your information.....

Because things happen very quickly in the 'Malware' world it is recommended that the following steps be taken to reduce you exposure to viruses.

1. Install and run a good Anti-virus suite. and UPDATE IT REGULARLY, and by regularly I mean check that the program has performed an automatic update or you have done so at least once per week., if the virus definition updates are two week or more old, you will need to check out as to why!.  It is the Updates or Definition codes that allow these programs to protect you most efficiently

2. Install and run regularly a Adware/Parasite-ware removal program, currently my recommendations are Spybot Search and Destroy, and AdAware. I would recommend no less than once per week

.

3. Configure your email client program so that you don't accidently open an infected email.. in Outlook Express.. Disable the preview pane (Views-Layout remove tick from preview Pane)

4. Take care what emails you open. If you working with in a company a supplier won't send you an email with a subject of "I Love You", Microsoft and Symantec (Norton AV) only send emails to people who have Subscribed to their news letters.. They don't send "Patches" via email, and their emails are spell checked and DO have excellent grammar.  Also just because the antivirus program checked it and said all was ok. If it is suspect, that is it dosen't fit into what you have become familure to as "Normal" email.. DON'T OPEN IT!!

5. As important as the anti-Virus is Check that Windows Update is working, this should be a weekly ritual.

6. You Observation and Care in use of your computer is one of the most valuable tools in the fight against Malicious software.  Or in other  words, the most expensive protection system can be rendered useless by a careless operator..

Please note: Most Problems that I have encountered on peoples computers have not been Virii, but either Adware/Spyware or damage due to the users deletion of system files.

I do recommend a good anti-virus program the most expensive is not necessarily the best. The fact that I use the information supplied by the above companies isn't a recommendation for their products.  Some Anti-Virus products are better for YOUR situation than others.. Check the Anti-Virus companies Links Page for those that I regularly Visit.
