South West Hearing Conservation and Industry Medical Services provides another service to the Mining Industry in regard to worker’s health and that is a combined audiogram and lung function test, which is a requirement to working in the industry. The potential breathing and lung function problems associated with working in dusty conditions is a health risk and the testing program shows the worker any change in their lung capacity, and can make an informed decision as to the environment they are working in.
The other important aspect that the health survey does is it builds a data base of different minerals and the effect it has on worker’s health, which allows the mine health authorities to inform workers and companies of the air borne dust problem, and plan the management of Mine Worker’s Health.
South West Hearing Conservation and Industry Medical Services offers this as a mobile service, and register the results in the DOME (Department of Minerals and Energy) management system.
Other industry, which creates dust and fumes, may look at the need to conduct lung function testing in the future.
