American Indians were famed for their powers obtained from their knowledge of herbs. Their smoking blends were one of their prized possessions. Medicinally this plant has been successful in the treatment of gravel, stones or ulceration of the kidneys or bladder and adds relief to the discomfort of urinary tract infections. In vitro tests have shown extracts and the active contained active constituent, arbutin, to have antiseptic qualities.
The Indians and settlers called this herb Sagackhomi. It was used on its own or together with tobacco for their sacred smoke and also known traditionally as 'Kinik kinik'.
It has gained its common name from the Bears fondness of its berries.

Traditionally this was also a popular smoking herb.

Used as a tea traditionally. Use 1 teaspoon of leaf per cup and steep in a pot of hot water for ten minutes.
