Preparation of Kava for Beverage
There are different methods for obtaining a beverage from
the root of Kava. The ancient method, still in use today, is
not suitable for most modern people. The fresh root is
chewed, usually by virgin girls or boys, and spit into a
bowl. This wad of well masticated root is mixed with cold
water and strained through some natural fiber.
Although very effective, this method is rapidly giving way
to a more modern extraction method using dried and
pounded root as in the following recipe.
One fourth cup of ground kava root is placed in a
cloth bag or wrapped in the center of a cloth. A dish
towel can be used.
Place cloth in a bowl with about a quart of water.
Keeping the kava root within the cloth, knead with
fingers and fist for 5-10 minutes until water takes on
the color of coffee with cream and a slightly foamy
surface.
Pour off liquid for drinking.
This amount will serve one to four people. The process can
be repeated with the same bag of Kava. The second rinse
being more dilute.
Got a blender? This is even more modern.
Place three rounded tablespoons of Kava in blender
with three cups water. *Optional:add 1 teaspoon
granular lecithin. (Our favorite!)
Blend on high for two minutes.
Strain through medium sieve.
*Lecithin helps to emulsive and activate the kava. A
tablespoon of vegtable oil may be substituted for the
lecithin.
Some people enjoy the earthy, aromatic flavor of
Kava root.
Here's a few variations on the basic recipe:
Try adding kava to a fresh fruit smoothy.
Use coconut milk in place of water.
Add some fresh sliced ginger root when blending.
There are many creative ways to enjoy Kava. Make
up your own favorite recipe!
