Raid 2000 Impressions

My little 2CV ran faultlessly over the total 14,000km. traveled in 49 days.
Raid 2000 for me was in 3 (or maybe 4) separate ventures
1) Getting from Perth to Alice SpringsTo add to the challenge of Raid 2000, local club member Ralph Hibble had organized a complementary Raid "Cape to Cape" from Cape Leeuwin in the south west of our big land to join up with Raid 2000 to reach to Cape York, at the far North East of the continent.
The route of this section was virtually a straight line from Cape Leeuwin to Alice Springs all across predominantly reasonable dirt roads. Over 75% of this trip was extremely sparse, waterless inhospitable country between two deserts.
2) Raid 2000:
a) Alice Springs to Cairns via Kurumba & Lawn Hillb) Cairns to Cape York on the "Bypass Road", road conditions were atrocious.
c) Cape York to Cooktown then to Cairns via the rugged Bloomfield Track which was unbelievably rough & steep.
3) Returning from Cairns to Perth "over the top" predominantly on bitumen.

Cars Left to right: "Putt Putt", "Beencan", Greg Bracegirdle's "Cajanduck", "Sunflower", Keith Shead's, Big Alex's, Justin's (Our Pizza man's) BX & the soon to be dreaded Steve Wedell's DS Photographic. By pure consistent coincidence, Steve's car had a habit of being at the most difficult road sections, where video shoots always seemed to be taken by a hidden operator. |
