Early Drypoints

It was in early 2007 that my wonderful mum and I decided to spend some time together doing a printmaking course. Although we had both experimented with prints in our respective arts courses, neither of us had done so with any gusto. We began the course by trialing Drypoint on Perspex. I had been experimenting with cartoons, and these were easily transferred to prints. Here is a selection of the more successful images.

This print has often been misunderstood in that people think that there is actually a smile on the page for the viewer. Actually this image was creating when I was having difficulty smiling, yet I was still trying to force one. In early 2007 I was asked to produce six prints in response to Alice in Wonderland, luckily a childhood favorite! Instantly the Cheshire cat, and that magnificent wandering grin, came to mind. This print was made in the throes of a nasty breakup. Waiting for the phone to ring is a common experience to most girls, nevertheless, it is a painful one. It is a common trait of girls to analyze everything! This image was made in a rare moment, thinking about the poor males on the other end of this … scrutiny. This was another in the series influenced by Alice in Wonderland. The looking glass, in my mind, was like a magnifying glass that Alice, or this little girl, looked through, and was looked at through. This was a second attempt at the looking glass. This time I tried to add another layer by wiping the ink like one might wipe a very dirty window. This was a response to a mundane job, a place I didn’t want to be in, trying to find the courage to leave. It is difficult sometimes.
