Early Etchings

Upon moving to the sunshine in Queensland I joined a local printmaking group called Impress. As a part of this group I was able to attend monthly workshops in etching. I began as a true beginner, not even knowing, really, what the term etching meant. The teachers were wonderful and my cartoons were quickly transformed into etching prints. Here is a selection of the early works.

The image was made in an etching workshop. I was working with the idea of fragile tape used for postage, and how it could represent how we are feeling on the inside, whilst being shown on the outside. Etching 2008 The image of a glass bottle was one that we used to practice tonal change at university. The smooth surface, rounded edges and light reflections were perfect for practicing the nine grey tones. I used this image to practice the same technique in an etching. Etching 2008 This was the first image of the bridge over troubled waters that was created for the exhibition Bridging. The most successful image can be seen in the Series Two page. Etching 2008 This image was made for an exhibition supporting the victims of prostate cancer. It was a humorous exhibition in which artists were asked to create an image about jocks and socks! Etching 2008 Sometimes the connection in a relationship seems to hanging by a thread. Sometimes the void seems too deep to cross. Etching 2008 As the title suggests, sometimes it only takes a bunch of flowers to cheer a girl up. Etching 2008 Occasionally moments in your life leave you feeling like you are – floating on air. This image was made with the optimism that the path in life will keep floating. Etching 2008 This and the previous image, Sometimes you feel like you are floating on air, were made at the same time – a time when things were just going right. Etching 2008 This image was the second made for the Bridging exhibition. I was experimenting with the aquatint in the sky and the river. Etching 2008
