Series 1

This series was a response to the wonderful graffiti that can be seen through the streets of any thriving city. I have always been fascinated by the talent these artists have, and the way they can build a 3d image using only a couple of cans of spray paint. I have always like the raw quality that some of the dirty streets conveys; Brunswick or Smith St, St Kilda in Melbourne or Fortitude Valley in Brisbane. It is real life, I think, with all its faults and successes; it is lonely and hard at times, but often very visually astounding if you take the time to look.

In this image I was looking at the different ways graffiti is displayed on the walls of our city. The girl behind the wall is there to remind us of the faceless artists that make these wonderful images. Etching 2008 I like the contrast between the light and the shadows. I think the light asks us to pay attention to what it illuminating. The girl like figure was one I was working with that was influenced by the graffiti theme in this series. Etching 2008 This image came together in a sketch and was made to trial different etching techniques. The meaning is still unknown to me. Etching 2008 This is one of two images that were influenced by city graffiti. I wanted to juxtapose the desolate sense of the dirty city with the amazing graffiti images. Etching 2008 This is one of two images that were influenced by city graffiti. I wanted to juxtapose the desolate sense of the dirty city with the amazing graffiti images. Etching 2008 This is another image in which I was looking at light and shadow. I was using spray paint as an aquatint to play with the elusive nature of shadows. Etching 2008 This is my favorite image from this series. These two strange figures remind me of many conversations I have had with my family. There are many different things that they could be talking about. Etching 2008 In this image I wanted to combine the girl with the graffiti figure. I used different etching techniques to make them so different. Etching 2008
