Scrapbooking is the art of preserving photographs to ensure enjoyment by future generations.

From this basic concept the rest is up to you! You can be as elaborate or conservative as you wish but one key focus in Scrapbooking is not to “just put photos in a book”, like we used to do in the past, but rather to enhance the whole experience of reliving those precious memories by including other things such as journaling, and memorabilia on our pages. In doing so, we bring our pages to life and make things much easier for the viewer to understand and enjoy.

There’s nothing wrong with this of course, and we all enjoy a good chat, but now imagine being given a book of photos with the scenes, people and actions depicted described for you on the page. It adds a whole new dimension and from the “scrappers” point of view, how often have you just plain forgotten details of an event?  Come important things to include in your journaling are;

  • Dates
  • Places
  • People’s names
  • The reason or focus of the event

You can hand write, use a computer or stickers, but always remember to journal.

Journaling is possibly the most underused aspect of Scrapbooking, especially in the beginning when it can be easily overlooked. Simply put, journaling is the mortar that binds your Scrapbooking project together. Imagine being given a book of photos to look at from someone’s holiday, for example. You will no doubt ask questions on the events pictured and the person will inevitably end up giving a running commentary as you peruse the scrapbook. .

One other important aspect of  Scrapbooking is never to loose sight of the centre of attention, your photographs! It is very easy to get carried away with adding memorabilia, stickers and accessories until they themselves become the reason for the page. Always remember that any accessories or additions should enhance your photo display and not detract from them.
