At present Kelmscott Primary School caters for a little under 400 children from Kindergarten to Year 7.
The school is located in the South Eastern Perth Metropolitan Area on the banks of the Canning River in Kelmscott with views to the Darling Range.
The school is committed to providing challenging and developmentally appropriate learning programs reflective of the needs of its students.
Our curricula and co-curricula initiatives in 2010 include Music (Theory, Choral and Instrumental), Drama, Physical Education, Library, German, Computer Technology, Visual Art, Swimming, Athletics and Cross Country.
A comprehensive Environment Program is a feature of the school. A compost
and wormery program makes good use of all biodegradable materials usually destined
for the bin.
The revegetation of the banks of the Canning River with indigenous plants raised
in the nursery, has established a bond between students and the natural environment.
At Kelmscott Primary School we Reduce, Reuse & Recycle!
A strong values and pastoral care program exists.
Students have the opportunity to develop their knowledge, skills and attitudes through the Rainbows, Values, Friendly Schools & Families and Managing Anger through Art programs.
This year we present the following opportunities to students who showed an
interest and some aptitude:
Year 3: Violin
Year 4: Cello
Year 6: Brass, Clarinet, Double Bass, Classical Guitar and Keyboard
Years 3, 4 and 5 learn the recorder
In addition, students deemed suitable will have access to the Cannington Education Districts Gifted and Talented programs.
Our school also has an Education Support Unit for students with an intellectual
and/or learning disability. Integration of these students within mainstream
classes is a regular feature of the school's program.
Our school colour is Royal Blue, offset with white. The school maintains high uniform standards and there is strong parental support for wearing the school uniform. A well-stocked Clothing Pool operates and as a result most of the students wear the school uniform.
The four 'factions' of Kelmscott Primary School are derived from local families
associated with the early days of settlement:
| Buckingham | Valley Green | ||||
Dale |
Maroon
Ellis | Orange
Martin | Aqua
Blue
|
We strongly encourage the wearing of these colours on sport and carnival days.
Factions T-shirts can also be worn on Fridays.
Polo jumpers and shirts are also available for parents and other larger supporters.
A faction competition which encompasses Merit Certificates, playground citizenship,
assemblies and sporting results runs throughout the school year.

The Senior Choir is drawn from Years 5, 6 and 7 on the basis of an audition. A high standard of dress and decorum is necessary owing to the public nature of the choral work.
Children wishing to be part of this Choir must agree to a strong level of commitment to practising and to performing.
The Choir performs regularly at Anzac Day Services, Telethon Concerts and Christmas concerts.
Previously, the school has staged such productions as 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat', an adaptation of 'The Wizard of Oz' and 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' which have all showcased the talents of our students, staff and parents in the many areas associated with these productions.
The Junior Choir is also well-supported by our Junior students and this Choir provides a 'training ground' for many students for the Senior Choir as they progress through their school years.
Our music literacy program is outstanding and is the main reason we have over
sixty instrumental music students. These children play a range of instruments
from violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, clarinet, recorder and trumpet.
These students are taught by visiting Education Department Music teachers It is with pride that we were able to have our music room officially named after Mrs Sally Christmass in our 125th year (2007) in recognition of her contribution to our history.
MUSIC:
Kelmscott is a music school. A developmental music program initiated in this school operates in all grades. It strives to teach musical literacy at a level appropriate to all children.

Pre-Primary and Years 1 and 2 children have regular PMP (Perceptual Motor
Program) sessions which are designed to develop hand-eye coordination together
with fine and gross motor skills. There is a consistently high interest and
commitment towards sport by our students
COMPUTERS:
In 2001 the school completed its networking commitment.
In 2005 a new server and further infrastructure were installed to cope with the increase in the number of computers available to each Teaching Area.
Each teaching area has at least one post- 2005 computer.
All Teaching Areas have at least two computers connected to the network.
The school continues to upgrade the computers as the need arises and resources become available.
All classrooms have access to the Internet and the Library Resource Centre database.
The number of computers in the Computer Room has been increased to 17 to allow an entire class to access the computers on an average of two per computer basis.
The school is indebted to our P&C Association for its ongoing support of this commitment.

It is especially important that over a school year cooperation and trust is developed between parents and teachers. Many learning and social problems which children may experience are improved when they know that their teacher and parents are working together to help them.
Parent/Teacher interviews are a healthy and desirable part of the school program.
Assemblies provide opportunities for children and groups of children to appear before a live audience. Children see themselves as part of the whole school and the basis for a cooperative school ethos is built.
'Parent' assemblies are held each fortnight and each class has a turn in running the assembly and also perform items which reflect the themes in their class work.
'Domestic' assemblies are run by the Faction Captains and Vice-Captains and allow the children to develop leadership skills in a controlled environment. Microphone skills are practised and choral and instrumental music students are given an opportunity to perform to a wider audience.
Kelmscott has long been known as a place for parent participation in a great variety of roles. The less formal areas are simply the attendance at the assemblies and assisting with various school activities. There are also several organised ways where parent participation is highly valued and encouraged:
the School Council;
the Parents' and Citizens' Association Meetings;
the School Canteen and
the Clothing Pool.
STAFF:
We have always been fortunate to have teachers who are not only experienced but who have expertise in a wide range of subjects. All our staff, both teaching and non-teaching, with patience and dedication, help the students to learn the value of honesty, integrity and cooperation with others.
