DYKE WRITE : : celebrating creativity and diversity in lesbian and bisexual women

Was Dyke Write created by an omnipotent being? Or did it just evolve naturally, forming itself from random bytes floating around in cyberspace?

Humble beginnings : :

The story of Dyke Write begins in late 1999 with the meeting of scarlet and phoenix in the 'Pink Triangle' chatroom at Excite.com. Literally a world apart, scarlet (from england) and phoenix (from australia) became buddies, wreaking havoc in the chatroom at every opportunity.

Early 2000 saw scarlet and phoenix discussing websites, scarlet had shown phoenix her Alien Resource website, and phoenix had the idea of creating a website on which to post her writing but had no idea where to start. Together, scarlet and phoenix formulated the idea of Dyke Write, a site to showcase their writing. In March, Dyke Write went 'live' online with scarlet as webmistress.

Throughout the two years since it's birth, Dyke Write has evolved to include the writing of a variety of lesbian and bisexual women from around the world, and the level of content has grown dramatically - from a few pieces of poetry by phoenix and prose by scarlet, to accepting work from other writers, providing important and useful links to visitors, and even it's very own e-greeting card service!

Dy-ke-namics of change : :

Currently, Dyke Write is undergoing a transformation. The past six months have seen some changes in scarlet and phoenix's respective personal lives; extra commitments with work and study have resulted in a lack of time available for editing the site and keeping it up to date, especially in regards to submissions.

To solve this problem, scarlet and phoenix have shifted the writing to a forum, allowing visitors to post their own writing and eliminating the waiting period for new writing to appear on the site. Of course this also brings with it a new level of interactivity within Dyke Write: comments are now able to be posted on specific pieces.

In correlation with the changes in how submissions are handled, scarlet and phoenix have embraced the idea of change and are giving Dyke Write a facelift! The new layout is designed to be easy to use as well as more aesthetically appealing, with the inclusion of a graphical banner and bright, new colours.

Beyond the veil : :

What does the future hold for Dyke Write? Will it be around for another two years or longer? We sure hope so, and as long as scarlet and phoenix are still writing and still have access to the net, you can be assured that Dyke Write will just keep on growing!
