Busselton Attractions, Activities and Interests

Local History:

Busselton's History, in terms of European Settlement, is recent, having been established as a Settlement in the 1830s. The Bussell Family, along with a few other British Settlers, made their homes on the banks of the Vasse River. They built St Mary's Anglican Church (still a Place Of Worship, and worth a call). St Mary's Church and Churchyard evokes a sense of history in the visitor.

These early settlers developed a close Farming Community and through time the "Vasse,"as the area was known, became the Township of Busselton.

American Whaling Ships carried out operations in the waters around the Bay and Cape. Whaling was also carried out by some of the locals, and now that the Whale is protected a new kind of hunt goes on, that is with cameras and boats engaged in Whale Spotting. Whale watching trips can be arranged at Kinvarra.

Of course, before the arrival of Europeans, the area was populated by Aboriginal People, ie., the Noongar Tribe. Noongar People are custodians of an enduring Heritage and Culture. Visitors may share this Cultural Dimension through specially structured Aboriginal Tours and Activities. More information can be acquired at source.

Books are available regarding Busselton's History. These can be accessed through local Bookshops and Tourist Outlets.

Water Sports:
Busselton is a top tourist town. Sheltered in the clear blue waters of picturesque Geographe Bay with its white sandy beaches, it is a haven for swimming and diving.
The beaches are also very safe for swimming. Diving equipment and instruction are available from a number of reputable Dive Centres in the Town.
Boating and fishing are also features of this area, and fishing trips can be organized.
Sailing on a local Schooner under the control of a competent skipper and crew can be arranged; sunset cruises around the Bay with a meal and wines on this vessel being a memorable experience. This vessel also engages in Whale Watching Trips, as do other boats in the district.
Natural Environment:
Busselton has a rich and varied Scenic Environment. It has one of the greatest varieties of Wildflowers and Birdlife in the World. Wildflowers are at their best from September till November when the surrounding Bushland is ablaze with colour.

Photographic Safaris:
This unique type of Safari is readily available. You can take your own cameras and equipment, or have it supplied by the Safari Operator who is a professional Photographer and has a special license to take visitors into areas of the National Park to Camp. One day Safaris are also available from the same Operator.

Cave Visiting/ "Bush Tucker" Trips:

Accompanied by an Aboriginal Guide, these are very popular outings. The Caves are enormous subterranean caverns complete with huge stalagmites and stalactites. Some of these caves have underground lakes and all are beautifully lit. Overall, well worth a visit especially as other attractions are to be found in the same locality, such as the Vineyards.

Vineyards:

The Wine Industry features prominently in the District's Economy with the beautifully appointed Vineyards having become synonymous with Tourism. Local Wines have acquitted themselves excellently by World Standards and to sit in such beautiful surroundings with friends, sharing a meal augmented with a favourite wine is surely an experience not to be missed. Kinvarra is situated close to the Vineyards, and we can arrange Vineyard Tours for our Guests.

Art And Craft Studios:

Interspersed throughout this scenic Region, Art and Craft Studios have evolved. These produce an excellent quality and range of Fine Arts such as Paintings; Ceramic, and Furniture produced from a range of beautiful Native Timbers.

All of the above are easily accessed from Kinvarra Park Lodge, where your Hosts Bill and Hilary can direct you on request.
