The town has been busier than school holidays with the
overflow for the caravan parks on the oval constantly occupied by many tourists.
Many travellers have been thankful of a fresh feed of fish with the
abundance and variety of species Exmouth has to offer. Town beach of a morning is producing large catches of yellow fin whiting for keen anglers setting up before dawn-break. Small segments of prawn on a lightweight outfit and small swivel bomb sinker seems to be the preferred option. High tide is best for this, however if the tide is too low, a short stroll to the marina will have you in good bream territory. The marina has been very active with queenfish this week.
Young Bryony Dickie was fishing with Mum and Dad, when Dad hooked up to a
54cm queenie that had the light weight rod bent almost in half.
He was using a 2.5inch Paddle Tail in Chartreuse Shine colours, with an
erratic retrieve. Low tide at Learmonth produced good catches of blue manner
crabs this week by a lucky couple. Usually
high tide is best there for most species, but this is a god option for the low
tide during the day. There have
been reports of many squid in the gulf and plenty of whiting along the beaches. Eight-one year old Duncan Cameron was fishing with friend, and well known local, Muddy in the gulf last week. Apparently the mackerel were so thick you could almost walk across them! Duncan’s catch of the trip was a double hook up on trevally. Two trevally fell to each treble on the one lure and after a confusing tussle, the twin trevally appeared beside the boat, much to the surprise of the anglers. |
