The summer winds are finally starting to abate, which is handy with GAMEX not far away now. With the glorious weather helping us get out and about both visitors and locals have been smiling lots over the last week. Are you interested in learning more about fishing? The Exmouth Game Fishing Club are having a rigging session afternoon on Sunday the 7th from 4-6pm at the Yacht Club. It is open to all interested anglers. There will be knot tying, bait rigging, lure rigging and explanations about legal lengths of leaders for those wishing to participate in GAMEX. Did you know that the first day of GAMEX is open to everyone? It is being called the “Novice Day” and is designed to encourage and introduce new anglers. It is also to offer those that can’t take the whole week off, a chance to be involved and just fish the one-day. There will be prizes awarded for all sorts of different categories and the entry fee is just $10. For further information, please contact President Matt Gates at Bluewater Tackle or call 9949 1315. There will be more of these social learning events for all sorts of aspects of fishing including throwing a cast net, casting bait-caster reels, fishing for the future, releasing fish, tagging fish, fly casting etc. If you have any ideas or would like to participate and put forward ideas please come down to the Yacht Club on Sunday the 7th of March from 4pm and help us to promote recreational sports fishing to the community. Local youngsters Joe Reynolds and Mitchell Pedlar have been having fun with the big sharks off the tip of the cape. Using 15kg monofilament line and wire leaders with mullet for bait the boys managed to land a few large predators. After a 20-minute fight they managed to land a bronze whaler on the beach estimated at 50kg. The most successful time for these is at dusk and in to the early night. Traveling anglers Becki Senior and Amy Howard from London headed off down the West Coast for a couple of days camping. They are very appreciative of the great fishing and coastline we have here, not to mention the camping grounds that are so close to the waters edge. Jacks and threadfin salmon have continued to show up in the marina, with the bigger jacks feeding better in the evening. Light mono and braid seems to be the pick with soft plastics certainly proving a winner with these species. Larger sized threadfin salmon have been caught using mulies as reported by anglers down at Sandy Bay. These fish are superb eating and great for that overnight camping trip. |
