Mixed reports have come in this week, with some anglers not
having any luck and others plenty. Cathy
Catoni and friend Mandy from Perth are holidaying in Coral Bay and Exmouth, with
fishing high on the agenda. Yesterday
Cathy caught a tailor while Mandy hooked up to something huge that finally spat
the hook after an exciting tussle. The two are also keen divers, snorkellers and explorers and
say that this coast is great for all four activities. The whiting have been showing up in large numbers,
particularly for Bob Jarris and friends who caught 18 during mid morning off
Bundegi beach using prawns for bait. Other
species reported from the shoreline along the beaches near Bundegi include small
threadfin salmon and queenfish. The marina has continued to fire. Last week a foreign tourist took a packet of hardy heads to
the marina after a suggestion of where to catch fish. After a short period of under two hours he returned gleaming
after catching a flathead, golden trevally, bream and large queenfish.
While he released some, he then asked for advice on how to fillet the
other fish. An unusual catch for this time of year was a 67 and 61cm
mangrove jack from the marina. While
there are plenty there during the warmer months, they don’t usually show up in
winter. The happy angler released
one and kept the other for dinner. Ali from Busso, Glen from Margs and Angus Sergent fished from a boat off Tantabiddi with squid and a fresh occy that they caught inside the reef. The swell was a little large outside the reef, yet they managed to land 15snapper and enjoyed the day immensely.
