The fishing has been a little quiet over the
past moon phase with some anglers reporting slow days and one operator even
having a zero fish day. Unfortunately
for the anglers aboard that particular boat that day, the fishing was unusually
bad, however the guests enjoyed their time here and wish to return. The scattered anglers around the marina have
been catching and releasing bream, queenfish and small trevally on the high tide
towards the mid week and small segments of prawn or soft plastic lures were once
again the preferred choice. Along the west side catches of spangled emperor have been
scarce although many believe next weeks tides will improve the stakes. One angler catching snapper in the gulf
raised a sailfish. In full view of
the crew, the sailfish managed to snatch the snapper from the hook, then hooked
itself and released the snapper! After
a fifteen minute battle the sailfish was brought along side and released to
continue its feeding. Russell Bok from Hillary’s was fishing
with a lumo green squid west of the Muiron Islands in around 70m of water with
his mates. The lumo squids are a
soft plastic squid that has a luminous light inserted before you send it to the
ocean floor. This type of fishing
has taken off in Perth and is now flowing through up here.
Russell caught a large rankin cod with his first drop.
Other species caught by the crew included various emperor and shark
mackerel. On a sad note this week we would like to pay a tribute to 28yr old Darren Male who went missing off Esperance last week during a fishing trip. Darren was an avid angler who visited here last year with good friend, and now resident, Cameron Trowbridge. We had the pleasure of fishing with Darren along the Pentacost River near Wyndham chasing barramundi, and then taking him out here in Exmouth to catch some “big fish.” Darren and Cameron were wrapped with their day out here catching wahoo, yellow fin tuna, mackerel and hooking up to billfish. Consequently Cameron has since moved here and envious Darren was hoping to possibly do the same. We pass on our condolences to Darren’s family and friends. |
