K.Z.Z.R. MAPS

Welcome to my "Maps" page to the Kalamunda Zig Zag web pages.

In this page you should be able to "Trace" where the line used to go , all the way form the Perth suburb of Midland through to Kalamunda , Pickering brook & Karragullen ( The end of the line ) , Bartons mill was extended from Pickering Brook & a line was also laid to the timber mills near Carinya so I'm told.

These maps were scanned from an "Old" out of date metro street directory ( U.B.D. map book )

Perth Map 1

Here is a "Full Area" view of Perth & it's suburbs ; The "Kalamunda Railway" line is highlighted for a clearer view of where the line went.

Gradient chart

This Gradient Chart came from the drawings of Adrian Gunzburg via the Kalamunda Historical archives.

Map 1 - As you might see - The Perth metro suburban line comes in from the left of page entering from Guilford & terminating at Midland ; It's from here that the "Kalamunda" line starts - proceeding off to the right of page to Belvue ( see next map ) , The long stretch winding it's way down the map is the "Interstate Main Rail" line going to the "Forrestfield Rail Terminal" & Rail Depot , you might note the main Runway of Perth Airport to the left lower corner of this map.

Map 2 - Entering from the Left side of this map - The Kalamunda line turns to the Right at Bellevue & continues down the page towards the "Zig Zag" then up to Gooseberry Hill & Kalamunda ; The Roe Highway cuts accross where the line used to go ; The Midland Millitary Markets now stand where the old line began & you also might notice there are 3 other lines that continue from here , The current main Interstate line ( to top of page ) , The old line through John Forrest national park ( & Swan view tunnel off to the mid right ) & the old line up to Mundaring ( Lower right ) via Boya which also joined up with the line that went through Swan View & then to Northam.

Note : The pic below shows an MSA class garrett returning back to Midland over the now "gone" wooden bridge which would've been near the Roe Highway ( painting by Gordon Brown ) , The location of this pic can be seen on the map inbetween the Roe Highway & Millitary road where the creek is.

Map 3 - This next map shows the line to the Zig Zag , Gooseberry Hill & Kalamunda , The line ran along the back of the old "Rifle Range" then onto what is now Ridge Hill road before climbing the Zig Zag ; Gooseberry Hill station is marked on this map & Kalamunda ( & station ) is just off to the right of this page & can be seen on the next map.

Although this pic might not show it clearly - This pic of the Zig Zag is taken from the "Google Earth" webiste & basically outlines how it looks today.

Map 4 - Entering from the Left ( about half way down ) the line from Gooseberry Hill comes into Kalamunda & the station can be seen where the Blue mark is ; From here it continues down off this map onto the next map which will be added when time permitts.
