Welcome to the "Archive Pics" relating to the Kalamunda Zig Zag.
In here you'll find some scanned pics from out of the Kalamunda Historical Archives & some that originally came from Perth's "Batty" Library which houses most of W.A's "Archives".
I also hope to gain copies of other peoples pics taken by someone that they have known who have had links to those who originally worked either on the line or who have travelled on the line when it was in use.
The next few pics came from the Kalamunda Historical Archives , Please note that Kalamunda has had atleast 4 name changes over the years - The original name & 3 variations of the 2nd name ; It went from its original name of "Stirks Landing - after Frederick Stirk , Then was named "Kalamunnda" for some time , then renamed to "Calamunnda" & finally to what it is called today - "Kalamunda"
In this pic "Kalamunda was spelled with the "NN" near the end of its name & was possibly taken before 1927 when the new larger building replaced the 2nd small building that is visable in this pic , You'll be able to see that the KalamuNNda pub was there in the early 1900's then & still stands today , This pic would have been taken around 1903 to 1910 era.
Although a "Tall pic" this shows 2 views of the "new" larger building after the change in 1927 when this pic would have been taken.
In this pic an MSA class Garrett loco stands at Kalamunda Station before continuing on to Pickering Brook & Karagullen or possibly even to Bartons mill perhaps , This pic would have been taken before 1927 as there are 2 small buildings in this pic.
This pic shows a "G" class loco decending down the Zig Zag with one carriage in tow.
This pic shows a "Qa" class 4-6-4 tank loco decending down the Zig Zag with a small freight in tow heading towards the top set of points , You'll notice the quarry siding to the right hand side of this pic.
This pic came from out of one of the local newspapers in recent years & also shows another "G" class loco either about to "Tackle" the hill or it could be continuing the decent down then onto Midland & perhaps then onto Perth ; The track to the left is the "Bottom Leg" of the Zig Zag.
This pic comes from out of a book by A.E. Durrant titled "Garretts of the world" & is a very good pic of an MSA class loco heading from the Zig Zag into Midland , The loco is crossing the wooden bridge near what is now the Roe Highway & the remains can still be seen as you drive along Military road just out of Midland , This bridge would have been on the right hand side as you head north into Midland.
I intend to add more pics here at a later date or when possible.
