Welcome to my Train "Sets" page , This page will show trains that were a "Set" when they were in Full sized operation , These "Sets" represent the "Named Trains" that ran many years ago in Australia.
The Trains listed here are from all over Australia & there are only a few "Named Trains" that still run today , these being the "Indian Pacific" , the "Ghan" - N.T./S.A. , the australind" - W.A. & the "XPT" - N.S.W. ; Trains like the "Newcastle Flyer" & the Southern Aroura - N.S.W. , the "Spirit of Progress" - Vic , the "Overlander" - Vic/S.A. & the "Sunlander" - Qld sadly no longer run while the "Western Endeavour" - a steam hauled special - has the potential to be ran again some day , ( although I feel that the Overland train might still be in operation's today ) but I'm unsure of how often it might run.
The "Newcastle Flyer"
This model represents the "Newcastle Flyer" train that went from Sydney up to Newcastle in New South Wales , There were 6 "Named" trains that used these same type of carriages.
These model carriages were originally made through Friedmont back in the 1970's/80's & I've scratchbuilt the new chassis for each carriage & fitted "Micro trains" bogies under them along with adding some more detail to them & paint.
Here is the "Real" loco 3801 hauling the "Flyer" to Newcastle ( with a different set of carriages ) in 1989 on a Historical tour from Sydney while the other pic ( above ) was taken on the A.M.R.A. W.A. "N" scale club layout in 2007.

The Australind set.
The Australind set runs from Perth ( W.A. ) down south to Australind ( near Bunbury ) which is located just about 5 to 10 mins out of Bunbury & about 2Hrs South of Perth W.A.
Above: My "N" scale Australind set on a layout at a friends place , This model was made by my friend John Rumming for me many years ago.
Below: The Full sized Australind at Armadale W.A. in one of it's old colour schemes.
Hotham Valley "Riverland" set.
These "Riverland cars were built in Granville ( N.S.W. ) by Comeng & were made for the South African Railways & when they came up for sale over in South Africa - The Hotham Valley tourist railway bought them & returned them back to Australia.
This "N" scale model of the Hotham Valley's "Riverland" set being hauled by my "N" scale model "V" class loco ( V 1213 ) around a friends layout.
This pic shows the Full sized set at Armadale station back in 1994 behind V 1213 after the loco had it's it's 1st major overhaul in years & on it's 1st passenger run after returning back to steam.
The Indian Pacific
This train runs from Sydney ( N.S.W. ) to Perth ( W.A. ) & return on a weekly service , Over the years the motive power has changed many times - from the 44 class loco's & 46 class loco'ss in N.S.W ( along with 80's & 442's ) to the "GM's" & CLP's in S.A. & to the "L" classes & now "NR's" through W.A. this train has covered many Kilometers accross Australia ; I've modelled it here in "N" scale as it used to be around the 1980's as a 15 car set & with a "CLP" on the front.

Above & Below : 2 pics of the real Indian Pacific train as taken by my friend Dennis Rittson , the top pis was taken at Bowenfields in N.S.W. while the bottom pic was taken at Huddlestone ; Both of these pics can be found in Dennis Rittsons website which can be found in my "Links" page.
The N.S.W. XPT
The New South Wales XPT ( Express Passenger Train ) began operations in 1980 & is still hauling passenger services today to Brisbane in Queensland , Melbourne in Victoria & to various places around N.S.W. , I've tride to model this train in "N" scale but haven't quite done a good enough job of the paint work ( which will need to be re-done ) & is a modified Graham Farrish HST set , You'll be able to see the similaritties between the english HST & the Australian XPT as both of these trains were designed by the same person ; The full sized XPT was built by Comeng in Granville N.S.W. at the Clyde workshops.

Below - The real XPT nearing Raglan ( near Bathurst ) in N.S.W with the "Central West" XPT service on it's way to Bathurst & Orange , This service has replaced the old "Central West" service that was hauled by the famous C38's.
South Maitland Railways
This is my S.M.R. 10 class loco & set in "N" , This set represents a small part of the S.M.R.'s collection of about 100 or more of the L.C.H. style coal hoppers & about 30 something "10" class tank loco's , They also had a variety of other tender style loco's & in later years they used the government style "B.C.H." coal hoppers with another "C.H." style coal carriage type in it's last years of operation.
Above - my "N" scale S.M.R. set , I have now got 15 of the LCH style carriages since this pic was taken & have plans for more to go.
Above - This pic taken by John Hurst shows a typical SMR coalie on 1 of it's usual runs ,sadly these trains don't run any more.
For more of John's pics - just visit his website from the link listed below.
Please note - All of these pics were taken by me unless otherwise mentioned above.
