Kemill Hill Connemara Stud was founded in 1973 with the importation of the colt Errislannon Spartan from Anne Rolison (nee Hammond) of "Millfields", Newarket, England. Spartan had been bred by Steph Brookes at Errislannon Manor on the west coast of Connemara and had been sold onto England as a weanling. From a very good mare, Errislannon Daisy, Spartan was a full brother to the mares Errislannon Dana and Errislannon Diamante, both Champions in England in the late seventies. This line traces back to the stallion Carna Dun and thus to the thoroughbred, Little Heaven.
In 1974 the pure bred mare, Knock Ina, was imported to join Spartan, again being purchased from Anne Rolison. Knock Ina had been bred and reared in Connemara before eventually being sold onto England. She was by the well known stallion, Carna Bobby, and carried his very good shoulder. Before leaving England, Knock Ina was mated to the stallion, Wisbridge Erinmore.
Five months in foal, Knock Ina travelled to Sydney in a container vessel and then floated back across the Nullabor to Perth. Despite this ordeal she delivered a strong, healthy filly foal Kemill Hill Bridgina, the first to carry the Kemill Hill prefix. She also became another mare that could later be bred to Spartan.
The Knock Ina/Spartan union proved a very successful mating and provided in all 5 fillies and 3 colts. The females all provided years of reliable service as family ponies with success in Pony Club and the show ring. The oldest, KH Tinka, won a state wide competition as the pony most suitable for Riding for the Disabled work. Later in life she was a very successful brood mare for the Hillview Connemara Stud at Welshpool in Western Australia.
Of the male progeny from Spartan and Knock Ina, the oldest was KH Spinnaker. Spinnaker was purchased by a Spanish trainer and earned wide recognition for this spectacular displays under saddle with the Dancing Stallions on the Gold Coast, and later at El Caballo in Sydney. The next, KH O'Reilly, was purchased by the Malay Government to be used in a state run stud in Kuala Lumpur to upgrade their ponies. The third was KH Halligan.
| KH Bridgina was not the prolific breeder her mother was. She did, however, have one filly by Spartan, KH Amie (pictured right), who had success in led in classes culminating in being judged Supreme Connemara exhibit at 3 successive Perth Royal Shows. A gelding KH Lysander was used to teach many beginner riders, and on several occasions was used on the lunge in public displays of vaulting. He was eventually sold on to give years of faithful, reliable service as a Pony Club mount. | ![]() |
