![]() | Skipper competed in his first horse trials event in 1999 and finished his first season winning the final of the BATES AUSTRALIA EVENTING NEWCOMERS AWARD (SENIOR). Whilst only lightly competed in 2000, he again had a successful season to finish the year with a win in the Perth Horse Trials Association Wooroloo II Senior Pre Novice Event. This win took him into Novice level where he competed in 2001 again with success. Prior to competing in horse trials, Skipper's initial training was in the show jumping arena where he performed quite creditably to win and be placed at C & D grade levels. In 2001 he also began competing in official dressage and moved through Preliminary to Novice level, and has now competed with success at Elementary. |
Skipper was bred by Esther Bellis from "Skipcello" in New South Wales, Australia, and purchased by the Kemill Hill Stud as a yearling. Esther bred horses for a great number of years concentrating on producing a type with the movement and temperament necessary for success in the fields of eventing and showjumping. A study of Skipper's bloodlines reveals horses with strong performance histories.
| One such horse is Gershwin (pictured right) who was Andrew Hoy's mount in the individual phase of the Three Day Event at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. At Atlanta, Gershwin was only 9 years of age and was originally selected to be Andrew's reserve mount. Circumstances, however, meant he competed though still relatively novice in term's of 3DE experience. Despite this, Gershwin was among the 50% of competitors to complete the tough event, and the only Australian horse to do so. Prior to this, Andrew rode Gershwin to victory at Luhmuhlen***, his only second 3DE. In 2000 Gershwin with owner Merran Wallis riding, was second at Burghley **** event in England. | ![]() |
![]() | Gershwin is a full brother to Skipper's sire, Skipcello Whenua (left), also owned by Merran Wallis. Whenua himself is a successful performer in horse trials in the United Kingdom including being placed second in 1997 in the CCI** Macallan International Horse Trials at Burgie, Scotland. |
