Was also good to see Janet and Gem run the marathon, two former athletes who I coached for a few years. Good work all!!

1st May - Busso half - Big congrats Chris, Janet, Jade and all the Stadium Tri Club crew.

Very proud of all of them, but special mention goes to Janet, who I have coached for a few years. She has had some tough obstacles to overcome, namely two broken wrists and another scare with a crash at the Hillary's tri a few weeks ago. But she is persistent and finished in 6.24.43.

My brother Chris went around for his first half in a brilliant 4.51.34. It has been enjoyable to see him progress from no running at PT sessions to smashing a half ironman.

Jade is one of the STC crew who I have been helping out with her running. From Jade:

The run was a PB by 8mins!  Happy to have run 5min/km, just snuck into what was planned - i had forgotten the HIM is so HARD and LONG!  The 3rd lap was the killer avg dropped to +5.10min/km, but never felt like i had to walk (just couldn't move faster...) and wouldn't have been feeling that "good" without your extra run program - so THANKS!

31st Jan - City of Perth Triathlon - Chris improved in the bike and run, but slow swim conditions, meant no PB :( Look out at Pt Walter.

20th Dec Rockingham Tri - Chris had a PB with excellent improvement on the swim and run. There was also plenty of happy faces in the Stadium Tri Club's Beginners course. With many completing their first Triathlon. Well done all!

Bright Boot Camp - Ann

I originally signed up with Pursuit PT to improve my cycling fitness while working a Fly-in, Fly out job. I hadn't been cycling long and after a few months of building my base fitness, Mike decided "we needed a race." So I decided to do the Bright Boot camp in Victoria, which is 4 Days - 425 km -6,395 vertical meters of climbing. I had never done anything like this before, so those numbers didn't really mean anything to me. Mike assured me, with the right training I would be able to complete the 4 days of riding. The training plan Mike wrote for me was tough and required commitment. I really wanted to do well in Bright and the little achievements I made each week fueled my enthusiasm. I also had a PT session with Mike each week, to keep me focused (...and honest!)

When I arrived in Bright I wasn’t too sure what to expect of the rides and myself. I cycled to the top of Mount Buffalo and Falls Creek in decent times and I had energy oozing out of me. The scenery was beautiful and the achievements were sweet.
Day 3 was a 121 km ride ascending a total of 1,735 vertical meters to the top of Mount Hotham. These numbers started to mean something to me on this day – I was tired. It took everything I had to make it to the top of Hotham and it wasn’t easy. The last 10 km were the hardest of my life - I wanted to turn around so badly. But it was the best weather they’ve had in 6 years and I thought I haven’t traveled all this way to quit, so I kept pushing through the pain – and I made it. Awesome!

On the last day I was sitting in the cafe amazed that after joining with Pursuit PT 9 months ago, my little body had managed all that. Thanks to Mike’s effective coaching and the personal interest he had for me achieving my goal. I was in Bright, with tired legs and huge smile on my face.

Thanks

Ann.

Ann worked extremely hard during her program, never quitting! No matter what I put her through. Well done, I'm proud of what you achieved Ann.

Congrat to Geoff, has dropped from his holiday weight of 94kg in August down to 87kg. Keep it going! Update 86kg

Why I love my Job

From Marc, before he's 20min PB at the Perth Marathon.

I have learnt alot from you. Not just from doing this program, but by watching you and listening to you. You have put me on the correct path.

That alone is something I'll always be in your debt for. I look forward to obtaining greater goals in life because of this. Most importantly I have enjoyed every step of the 624kms covered in getting to where I am today.

Regardless of my finish time on Sunday, you have turned me into a runner that I didn't think possible.

Liz'z Sydney City to Surf Race Report

Last December I started training with Mike to get fitter and lose some weight. At that stage I didn’t see myself as a “runner” and would have struggled to run around the block. Recently, I participated in the Sydney City to Surf Fun Run.
I and two friends trained steadily for the 14 km hilly course but it didn’t go exactly as planned. One friend fell off her bike and broke her humerus (arm) and the other developed a stress fracture in her leg. As Mike said, at least I got to beat them!
So, I ran alone with the company of 80, 000 people and it was fantastic. It was a cool, sunny day and throughout the course there was plentiful water stops. The sound of plastic drinking cups being crushed under foot was surprising loud.
The course was hilly and windy but around each corner was another beautiful view of the harbour and I found my hill work around King’s Park helped. Mike had instructed me about my running technique so on the hills I l repeated the mantra of leaning slightly forward, pushing off from your toes and keep going during recovery downhill.
Towards the end of the race I was surprised to see the 3km sign and realised that I could easily complete the course. I started to run faster and at the end of the race you might have seen the elderly determined woman running as fast as she could. I finished in 1hr 29 minutes.
I am now training for a half marathon. Thanks, Mike for I could not have done it without your expertise and encouragement.

Christo's Busselton Half Ironman Race Report

My first look at the Busselton Half Ironman was in 2007 when I watched an awesome performance from Mike. At the time I was very unfit (10 years of no exercise!!) and I thought everyone competing was a little nuts! The inspiration from Mike and the desire to be a fit Dad for my little girl Emma got me going. After a slow start I got to the Australia Day event in 2008, then to the Perth Olympic Distance in 2009 and the Busselton Half as the goal for 2010.

After a casual approach around Christmas, Mike got my program together for a mid January start and I finally took up his instruction to join a swim squad. Not only was Mike’s program effective, it allowed me to fit in family and work commitments without too much trouble….just a lot of early mornings!!

My aim for the race was to be under 5 hours. I felt confident and had been surprised by the large number of kilometers I had covered in late March and April, but I wasn’t really too sure if it would all come together on the day.

Race day was great and I just wanted to get on with it. I felt comfortable through the swim. Although it was crowded I got into a good rhythm and managed to stay reasonably straight…the swimming squad paid off! I managed to keep a good speed on the bike and keep it up for the distance.

I knew getting off the bike that I was about 3hrs and 10 minutes in and was confident I could get home under 1hr 50m on the run. I had been running well in the few weeks leading up and I felt good. The first 2 laps of the run went well but the last lap was bloody hard work. My legs were tired and I struggled to keep the pace. It wasn’t until coming back into the spectator area with the finish line in sight that I could get a decent speed up.

I was stoked to get home in 4:51:34

Enormous thanks and gratitude to Mike. To get from unfit to a half ironman wouldn’t have occurred without him. Thanks for showing the way, the expert coaching and answering all those questions!!

Big Congrats to Liz who has dropped 7kg since starting in November. Also congrats to Geoff who has dropped 8kg. Keep it up all!!
Pursuit Flashbacks
13th of August 06 Pursuit PT sent Lou, Naomi (both pictured above), Gem, Annika, Tamsyn and Sharon to the Joondalup 10k as a final warm up race for the city to surf. Weather was bad, but it was the fact I didn't tell them it was a state championship was apparently more anoying. My Bad ;-)
