About Us Advanced Kayak Kits Australia is a small family business based in the village of Nelligen close to the south east coast of Australia. Virtually every part of the kits are produced by us from Australian made materials. Our kayak designs are based on well established design principals and construction techniques commonly referred to as 'stitch and glue construction'. Mike Snoad (the bearded one with the big fish) built and tested the first prototype in 1999.This was an expedition weight kayak he designed for a Bass Strait crossing. It is still used for expeditions and as a test bed for new ideas. Mike's philososphy is to design and build kayaks that not only look good but perform well in all conditions including the big seas that we get in this part of the world.
Daughter Kate Bessell developed the original layout of the Build Manual. Kate who lives in Adelaide and works in a family manufacturing business managed to fit this into her busy life by putting in many late nights on the manual. Kate is also our unpaid marketing consultant and adviser on strategic planning. Eldest son Nigel constructed this web site and did most of the graphic design work. He squeezed this into his busy life in New York where he was working at that time for the United Nations. Youngest son Tobias also did some of the graphic design work.Toby also does much of the web site editing. This includes fixing up the stuff-ups caused when Mike decides he wants to have a go at 'improving' the web site. Lots of friends and fellow kayak club members have helped especially at the concept stage and also with new ideas for improvements and new models.
