The system operates using a fully automated roll-by technique. The detection unit is mounted on the inner side of a rail. As the rolling stock passes over the device, analysis of whether or not the wheels of the rolling stock are sliding is undertaken. The wheels may be sliding because of braking or a mechanical fault, whereby the limits of adhesion between the rails and wheels is exceeded.

The MRX Rail Wheel Slide Detection System:

• Is equipped with sensors to detect bi-directional passage of a wheel enabling the system to maintain an accurate axle count.
• Operates at speeds of up to 20km/hr.
• Can be fitted with local, telemetry or synthesized voice radio alarms that warn rail operators of sliding wheel conditions.

It is therefore a very useful tool that can be used to reduce the potential of damage to the rail and rail vehicles.

The device also enables the wear of the tread of the wheel to be estimated. Wheels with worn tread do not track properly on the rails and lead to excessive rail and wheel wear.
