Christmas Island is located in the Indian Ocean just south of the Indonesian island of Java. It was originally under the protectorate of the British Empire, but is now administrated by the Australian government. There are approx. 4 000 residents living on the island at any one time. The cultural breakdown of the island is 60% Chinese, 30% Malay and 10% European. The island was originally commercially successful for mining of super phosphate. That enterprise is now in its final stages of operation, with secondary deposits currently being mined. The island has no other sustainable industry.
The district high school teaches pre-primary to Year 12 students and accomodates approximately 350 pupils. During my time working at the school, I taught a year 3 class, information technology on Macintosh computers and physical education from years pre primary to year 7.

Perth currently has a population of just over 1 million people and is the capital city of Western Australia. It is a lovely city - prettier than Melbourne, nicer climate than Brisbane, more exciting than Adelaide, quieter than Sydney, less politicians than Canberra and futher north than Hobart. Got it all, really!!
