Anthony Rope

Transport, 'Alexander '
Arrived 26 January 1788.
Tried Thursday 10 March 1785, age 26.

Place of trial: Essex Lent Assizes before
Sir Henry Gould & Sir Richard Perryn, Justices.


Burglary, by breaking and entering the house of
one Robert Gossling and stealing clothing and goods to the value of 35 shillings.

Transported 7 years.

Anthony Married
19th May 1788

Elizabeth Pulley

On the 14th March 1783 Elizabeth Pulley
Was sentenced to death for house breaking at
Hethersett, Norfolk and stealing  cheese, bacon, raisins
Flour and other goods to the value of
8 shillings & six pence.

Her death sentence was reprieved and she was
jailed until October 21 1786 when she was transferred to the Hulk ' Dunkirk. From here she was discharged to
The first fleet ship 'Friendship' 11 March 1787 for the long journey, Australia bound.

Elizabeth was an unruly convict on the voyage, she was
transferred from the 'Friendship to the ' Prince of Wales'
On the 28th October to make way for stock on the 'Friendship'

Arrived 6th February 1788

The Friendship
274 tons, 75 feet long, 23 feet beam.
Master Francis Wilson

The Prince of Wales
350 tons, 103 feet long, 29 feet beam.
Master John Mason Nuild

Anthony and Elizabeth Rope had very full lives it appears.  They had eight children and it is thought that their first child , Robert, born 30th October 1788 was the first white child to have been conceived and born on Australian soil.

Anthony became a settler, he held 48 acres of land in the Nepean district where he grew maize and raised his family.

Anthony Rope died at Castlereagh on the 20th April 1843 aged 84 years
His wife
Elizabeth Pulley died August 1837 aged approx 74 years.

They rest side by side with some of their children in the peacefulness of the old Castlereagh Cemetery
