Pemberton's Inland Desert

Largest Landlocked Dune System in the Southern Hemisphere!

Situated in the D'Entrecasteaux National Park, 20km from Pemberton are the Yeagarup Dunes. They are the largest land locked sand dune system in the southern Hemisphere and are moving at a rate of up to 6 meters a year into the forest. They were formed around 8000 years ago. |

- Measuring campsite area, compaction of campsites, volume of litter removed annually. - Measuring track depth and width to provide erosion rates annually.
- Completing daily fauna sighting and flora observation logs. - Transect surveys of flora species. - Collection and preservation of flora samples in a herbarium for public use in the Pemberton Discovery Shop. · To educate local residents and visitors to the area about the D’Entrecasteaux and Warren National Parks and the Yeagarup Dunes area through: - The provision of an interpretative activities kit for children. - Monitoring of driver and camper behaviour in the area and providing guidance and information to visitors. · To assist in the conservation of flora and fauna species through: - Fauna observations and reporting of Threatened Fauna Species sightings to Dept of CALM. - Reporting of known fauna habitats and nesting sites to the Dept of CALM for protection. - Reporting of persons behaving irresponsibly or in a manner likely to cause damage to flora or fauna to Dept of CALM.
· The formation of the Yeagarup Trust Fund committee, consisting of representatives from the following groups and organisations to oversee activities: - Dept of CALM - Pemberton Discovery Tours and Pemberton Hiking Adventures - Landcare - Ribbons of Blue - Warren Environment Group · Monitoring and reporting of Threatened Fauna Species sightings to Dept of CALM, including Hooded Plovers, Fairy Terns, Red-tailed Black Cockatoos, Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo, Long-billed Black Cockatoo, Quokka. Nesting sites are reported immediately to enable CALM to restrict access to nesting areas.
· Reports of threatened bird species sightings are reported directly to Birds Australia. Representatives from BA are invited on annual bird surveys. · Maintenance of a flora and fauna species list through flora surveys, a daily log of sightings on 4WD tours and Threatened Species reports. · Collection and preservation of flora samples. · The set up and maintenance of 3 measuring and photo location points and obtaining photographic evidence of dune movement. Monthly monitoring of dune movement from September 2002 to present has been conducted to assist understanding of dune movement and future planning for the area. · Daily litter removal and the provision of clean-up programs after peak periods from tracks, coastline and camp-site areas. · Providing interpretative and driver-education tag-along tours linked with the Dept of CALM school holiday programs.
