Yeagarup Dunes - moving towards the forest

Situated in the D'Entrecasteaux National Park, 20km from Pemberton are the Yeagarup Dunes.

They are the largest land locked sand dune system in the southern Hemisphere and are moving at a rate of up to 6 meters a year into the forest. They were formed around 8000 years ago.

ObYeagarup Dunesjectives:

  • To measure the rate of monthly dune movement of Yeagarup Dunes and provide photographic evidence of dune movement.

  • To monitor the impacts of recreational use on the Lake Yeagarup, Yeagarup Dunes & Yeagarup Beach areas through:

-          Measuring campsite area, compaction of campsites, volume of litter removed annually.

-          Measuring track depth and width to provide erosion rates annually.

  • To produce and maintain fauna and flora species lists from Lake Yeagarup to Yeagarup Beach through:

-          Completing daily fauna sighting and flora observation logs.

-          Transect surveys of flora species.

-          Collection and preservation of flora samples in a herbarium for public use in the Pemberton Discovery Shop.

·        To educate local residents and visitors to the area about the D’Entrecasteaux and Warren National Parks and the Yeagarup Dunes area through:

-          The provision of an interpretative activities kit for children.

-          Monitoring of driver and camper behaviour in the area and providing guidance and information to visitors.

·        To assist in the conservation of flora and fauna species through:

-          Fauna observations and reporting of Threatened Fauna Species sightings to Dept of CALM.

-          Reporting of known fauna habitats and nesting sites to the Dept of CALM for protection.

-          Reporting of persons behaving irresponsibly or in a manner likely to cause damage to flora or fauna to Dept of CALM.

 

Description of activities

·        The formation of the Yeagarup Trust Fund committee, consisting of representatives from the following groups and organisations to oversee activities:

-          Dept of CALM

-          Pemberton Discovery Tours and Pemberton Hiking Adventures

-          Landcare

-          Ribbons of Blue

-          Warren Environment Group

·        Monitoring and reporting of Threatened Fauna Species sightings to Dept of CALM, including Hooded Plovers, Fairy Terns, Red-tailed Black Cockatoos, Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo, Long-billed Black Cockatoo, Quokka.  Nesting sites are reported immediately to enable CALM to restrict access to nesting areas.

·        Monitoring and immediate reporting to Dept of CALM of whale or dolphin strandings along Yeagarup or Warren Beaches.

·        Reports of threatened bird species sightings are reported directly to Birds Australia.  Representatives from BA are invited on annual bird surveys.

·        Maintenance of a flora and fauna species list through flora surveys, a daily log of sightings on 4WD tours and Threatened Species reports.

·        Collection and preservation of flora samples.

·        The set up and maintenance of 3 measuring and photo location points and obtaining photographic evidence of dune movement. Monthly monitoring of dune movement from September 2002 to present has been conducted to assist understanding of dune movement and future planning for the area.  

·        Daily litter removal and the provision of clean-up programs after peak periods from tracks, coastline and camp-site areas.

·        Providing interpretative and driver-education tag-along tours linked with the Dept of CALM school holiday programs.

 

Outcomes Achieved:

Stage 1 (completed and on-going)

  • Formation of the Yeagarup Trust Fund group to oversee activities.

  • The acquisition of membership with Birds Australia. 

  • Selection and set up of 3 dune movement monitoring sites and photo location sites.

  • Monthly monitoring of dune movement (Photo location 1). 

  • Provided an indication of dune movement to the Donnelly District CALM office which has been relevant in the decisions regarding new road access onto the Yeagarup Dunes.

  • Photographic evidence of rate of dune movement across dune access track.

  • Completion of 40 page children’s interpretative activities book.

  • Leasing of a shop by Pemberton Discovery Tours in a high-profile location to educate and promote the natural attractions and activities in the area.

  • Education of visitors to the area and assisting understanding of the Yeagarup area ecosystems.

  • Daily log of weather conditions and flora and fauna sightings (appendix 3).

  • Reporting of Threatened Species sightings to Dept of CALM and Birds Australia.

  • Participation in the Hooded Plover research program, an annual survey conducted every February by Birds Australia.

  • Providing reference material on Hooded Plovers on all tours.

  • Warning CALM of Fairy Terns nesting on Yeagarup and Warren Beaches.

  • Reporting of whale or dolphin strandings along the coastline to Dept of CALM.

  • Litter clean-up programs after peak periods, continual rubbish removal from track and campsites on a daily basis.

  • Providing ‘The Secrets of D’Entrecasteaux’ tag-along tours linked with the Dept of CALM school holiday programs for the past 2 years.

Stage 2 (currently in progress)

  • Acquisition of flora collection license and set up of flora survey transects.

  • The collection of flora samples for herbarium production.

  • Selection and set up of 3 additional dune movement monitoring and control sites.

  • Selection and set up of campsite monitoring and control sites.

  • Selection and set up of track erosion monitoring and control sites.

  • Completion of the ‘Pemberton Discovery Kit’ to complement the children’s activity book and provide other activities and educational materials.
